The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Mail waiting at POP3 server, but SMTP server refused login

Asked by pcgreengrass in Email Clients

I am running a windows 2000 server with Exchange server which distributes mail to clients through Microsoft Outlook.  E-mail is received through POP3 (Demon) and SMTP (Eurobell).  We have been having problems with non-receipt of e-mail for quite a while now so were advised to install a different POP server than the standard Microsoft POP3 manager.  We now have igetmail as our POP3 server which provides some diagnostics (which I hope are useful).

For periods of time e-mails are received and sent with no problem, then all of a suddon both incoming and outgoing mail will cease and will only resume with a server re-boot (which is causing me no end of headaches!!).  The igetmail log provides the following information when things are going fine:

7/9/2003 11:18:10 AM pop3.demon.co.uk: Logged into POP3 server.
7/9/2003 11:18:15 AM 10.6.4.2: Logged into SMTP server.
7/9/2003 11:18:15 AM pop3.demon.co.uk: 1 message(s) ready for transferring from POP3 server to SMTP server

where 10.6.4.2 is a second internal IP address on our main server (the other being 10.6.4.1).  So all of a sudden our e-mails do not come through and we get the following in the igetmail log:

7/9/2003 10:32:04 AM pop3.demon.co.uk: Logged into POP3 server.
7/9/2003 10:32:06 AM 10.6.4.2: Mail waiting at POP3 server, but SMTP server refused login.
7/9/2003 10:32:06 AM pop3.demon.co.uk: Logging out of POP3 server.

And this continues to happen untill I re-boot the server, at which point everything gets back working again for anything between 1 and 10 hrs, before it goes pear shaped again.

Can anybody shed any light on this, it is making my life a misery and we are losing valuable e-mails in the process.

Please help any way you can.

Thanks
