Question

smtp cannot connect to destination server

Asked by: scoleman3

I wrote some code on our web server to send e-mails scheduled e-mails using SMTP server.  The e-mails arrive to my home e-mail address, but not to my work e-mail address.  The message in the mail queue says failure "due to being unable to successfully connect to the destination mail server" for my work e-mail address.  I'm not an expert at this and would need very specific instructions on how to resolve.

Well, you might start by providing the EXACT, VERBATIM error message, complete with headers. Hard for someone to give you very specific instructions if you don't give very specific information.

Repeating "EXACT, VERBATIM error message, complete with headers"

As you understand, there may be several different reasons for a rejection. To help out, we would need the full headers at least. Those aren't displayed by default in most mail clients, and the MS ones (Outlook, OE) hide them behind some wording about internet headers or whatever. Anyway you need to find them and post them here.

If the headers can't help us, next step would be to look in the server logs.

Possibly this is a simple one and your server isn't found in a reverse DNS lookup - sometimes messages are rejected for this reason.

You need to post all the necessary details as pointed out above, including the code you are using to send the mail.

Most probably, you need to use a smart host to send out your mail. It may be helpful if you use your ISP's smtp server as your smart host.

So, rid is right. The reverse lookup for your mail domain fails. Hence the bounce.

Hang on, that might have been a fast conclusion.

by: mburdickPosted on 2005-09-19 at 06:32:44ID: 14911524

You are trying to send e-mail to a user @fritolay.com. That domain has exactly ONE mail server, maildfw.pbsg.com.

Go to the console of your mailserver, log in, open a CMD window, and execute the following command:

telnet maildfw.pbsg.com 25

Post your results.

by: RanjeetRainPosted on 2005-09-19 at 06:33:45ID: 14911530

Just check if you have a connectivity between frito-lay-host.fritolayag.com and fritolay.com

frito-lay-host.fritolayag.com seems to be a local server inside your organization and you seem to be using it as a smart host. But what is not clear is, is their IPs. In the light of IP addresses it would have been possible to tell exactly the relartionship between the two. In the dark, we can say, test the connectivity between frito-lay-host.fritolayag.com and fritolay.com Create an A record in your DNS server or change the DSN server address on frito-lay-host.fritolayag.com. See how that can help.

by: scoleman3Posted on 2005-09-19 at 07:11:45ID: 14911891

For the telnet, I received the following

Connecting to maildfw.pbsg.com 25  could not open a connection to host on port 25

by: mburdickPosted on 2005-09-19 at 07:14:00ID: 14911912

There's your problem...

Your mail server can not connect to the other.

You will need to verify network routes, firewall rules, and possibly the e-mail policies of your ISP to determine where the breakdown is occurring.

Can you connect to other mail servers?

by: scoleman3Posted on 2005-09-19 at 07:14:16ID: 14911916

For RanjeetRain, the the frito-lay-host.fritolayag.com is completely external to fritolay's network.   I want to make sure that changing the DNS server address does not affect the web site.  This server is running http://www.fritolayag.com

by: RanjeetRainPosted on 2005-09-19 at 07:16:48ID: 14911945

Speak to your web host. Ask them if they are allowing traffic on port 25.

by: RanjeetRainPosted on 2005-09-19 at 07:17:45ID: 14911955

If frito-lay-host.fritolayag.com is local to you, chenging DSN here won't affect your site on http://www.fritolayag.com

by: scoleman3Posted on 2005-09-19 at 09:49:35ID: 14913525

To mburdick, the e-mails make it to to most domains except fritolay's.  I can't get any support from fritolay's IT team because this server is external to the network.  So, I should call Frontiernet (who provided my business class DSL for the server) and see if they can help troubleshoot this?

I did notice that the e-mails may not be making it to hotmail accounts either.

by: scoleman3Posted on 2005-09-19 at 09:55:02ID: 14913579

Here is the code (although I change the e-mail addresses sometimes - the addresses used below are real and active accounts)

Set objEMail = Server.CreateObject("CDONTS.NewMail")

   objEMail.From = "kerwinbradley@newnorth.net"

   objEMail.Subject = "Bradley System Alert"

   objEMail.To = "kerwin.b.bradley@fritolay.com"

   objEMail.bcc = "scoleman@mailblocks.com"

   objEMail.cc = "sherri.coleman@fritolay.com;scoleman@mailblocks.com;"

   objEMail.Body = "test the mail server on fritolayag.com"

   objEMail.Send

   set objEMail = nothing

   response.write "mail sent"

   response.end

by: scoleman3Posted on 2005-09-19 at 09:56:26ID: 14913598

How can I modify the above code to use my ISP's mail server?

by: mburdickPosted on 2005-09-19 at 10:27:50ID: 14913922

Your code is likely leveraging internal definitions on how to deliver mail. You will need to find that out, and possibly alter it to use a "Smart Host" instead of attempting direct delivery.

by: scoleman3Posted on 2005-09-19 at 10:54:48ID: 14914201

#1)How do you use and set-up a smart host?

#2) I just spoke with my ISP and they told me to set my outgoing mail to smtp.frontiernet.net , however do I do that in my IIS smtp virtual server or somewhere else?  (I couldn't find where to set in virtual server)

#3 Also, how do I need to modify my code once "smart host" is set.

by: mburdickPosted on 2005-09-19 at 11:03:34ID: 14914281

If your code submits the messages to the local SMTP host, then you will need to modify the virtual SMTP server settings to relay all mail through a single host instead of using DNS to deliver directly.

by: scoleman3Posted on 2005-09-19 at 13:26:22ID: 14915416

okay, do you have the steps to do this?  Or a URL where I can learn?

by: RanjeetRainPosted on 2005-09-19 at 23:24:11ID: 14917867

Since your code doesn't use a smarthost, you can change it at the server level. See this to change it: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=273644

My ISP gave me their smtp server address which is smtp.frontiernet.net   If I want my server to route my automated e-mails through their smtp server do I only need to put that address in as my smart host?  or where do I put that?  Also, I have a default Domain set-up under my smtp but when I go to properties, I only have the option to change the drop directory, I can't set anything else and this is the domain that is sending out my e-mails:  frito-lay-host.fritolayag.com
