Outlook 2007 Unable to change password via direct connection over a VPN to 2003 Exchange

Using Outlook 2007 to connect to an Exchange 2003 server via a direct connection using a VPN client, the client is forced to change their password. The user tries to change the password and the followign errors occurs :-
"Your Windows password could not be changed. To change your password, you must log on to your organization's network or contact your system administrator."
There is a fix on Microsoft Web site but this is reference to 2003 Outlook
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921650    Description of the Outlook 2003 hotfix package (Emsui32.dll and Outex.dll):
So is there the same problem for 2007 outlook.

Change it through a regular login to the domain

I wish it was that easy. Remote user "down under"  Connects via a VPN client only for emails. So no AD access apart from configuring OUTLOOK to connect to exchange server. AD integration then happens for password.
So he needs to set his own password. Can use the OWA access but this does not provide functionality to change password as it is set in th epolicy to change every 30 days.
You can always set up a reccuring event in Calendar to remind the user to change

No its no remembering....its the actual changin go fo the password process failing with the error  as above...........................

Your Windows password could not be changed. To change your password, you must log on to your organization's network or contact your system administrator." and there is a fix but refers 2003

Yes, but the calendar reminder would be to change through OWA instead of through Outlook

No..PLEASE READ................................the problem is , when the user tries to change his password  i.e. prompted my OUTOOK over a VPN connection, he enters his current password in the dialogue box , then new password and retype new password and the error comes up :- ....
Your Windows password could not be changed. To change your password, you must log on to your organization's network or contact your system administrator."
There is a fix to solve this problem is running 2003 Outlook  BUT this is a 2007 OUTLOOK client.
So the question is, is there a fix for 2007 OUTLOOK as   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921650   refers to 2003 OUTLOOK ?

So hope this makes it more clear....
Yes, I understand your dilemma. My proposal is to remind the user to change through OWA BEFORE Outlook requires a new password. Not that pretty but it would work

I understand, but I would like to say that it has nothing to do with what I posted my problem about.

Thanks for the link but, as I put in the thread in original question ... when prompted to change password this dialogue comes up and allows to enter "old" password  "new and confirm" password this is when is fails to allow to change. This is an OUTLOOK 2007 client.
That link just tells you inoutlook where to change.   This link  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921650   actually point out there a problem with this functionality but only references Outlook 2003 . I am unable to find anything talking about Outlook  2007.
Hope this enlightens the issue a little more ...

Thanks
Do you have enabled strong password policy? Maybe the users enter a too simple password (which would give them the stated error message according to the article).
Do you have a machine with Outlook 2003 to test with?

All our other clients use 2003 and works fine. This function can be performed on this account usign Outlook 2003 the difference being his machine and Outlook 2007. Due to geography (he is in Australia) cant see machine but seemingly this is the difference.

I know this is over a year too late, but just in case someone else has this problem I figured I would post a better solution...

While Outlook will not allow you to change an expired password from a non-domain computer, Remote Desktop will allow it.  Even if you do not have rights to login interactively it still works.

Just like the OP, I have an email-only account with a client.  When my password expires, I attempt to RDP to any machine and I am prompted to change my password.  After I change my password I am then told to pound sand because I do not have rights to login interactively.  But my password is changed and life is good.
DaytonaDave, you saved me today!

Your solution is brilliant, but obviously it is a one hit wonder as once the user sets themselves up on an RDP server, then they won't be able to reconfigure the password again.  However, fool me twice, then shame on me.

Please follow Dave's solution if you experience this problem.  Let me know if anything about the procedure is unclear.
Glad I was able to help!

Just to be clear on one thing, this does not need to be a one-hit wonder.  You can try to Remote Desktop to ANY computer on the domain and this trick will work.

For example, assuming you are not a Domain Admin, try to Remote Desktop to the domain controller -- it is usually one of your DNS servers with an internal IP.  You will not be able to login, but you will make it far enough along in the process to change your password.

I also wrote this up on my blog (which I need to pay more attention to):
