Windows Mail problem in Windows Vista

I have a problem in Windows mail in Vista. 2 messages are hung up in the Outbox folder and cannot be deleted. Message comes back saying A unknown error has occurred.
I have used Windows Explorer and deleted them from that persons identity in their Local Folders but when I go back to Windows Mail they are still there. I had this with a different person a week ago and ended up creating a new identity and importing their information into the new identity and deleting the old one. That fixed it but not a very easy solution. There ha to be a easier fix.
