Mac email with PDF attachements come through to Outlook as .dat files

My client has a problem sending PDFs to on of their clients via email (just one client). They send from Macs. The recipients are on Outlook (Server is SendMail). When the email arrives it has the .dat extension. Any suggestions as to why this is happening?
