Question

How do I import mail from Outlook Express 6 to Windows Vista Mail?

Asked by: DeborahSG

Hello,

I have .dbx files from Outlook Express and am having a big problem importing these .dbx files into Windows Vista Mail. When I try an import, Windows Mail doesn't see the .dbx files. They are there on the local, but the mail client can't see the files. What is the correct procedure? Do I require other files other than .dbx files? We have been troubleshooting this problem for a few days now, and would really appreciate some help!

Thanks in advance.

Deborah

Hello DeborahSG,

Yes, Windows Mail require other files.  Copy not only the DBX files, but all the files in the Outlook Express data folder to Vista local drive. Then Windows Mail will be able to import the DBX files.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

You can check this link. Before you import make sure the dbx file attribute is set to achieve.

Hello,

I've tried the steps proposed first of all in:

http://blogs.technet.com/james/archive/2007/06/08/
importing-outlook-express-dbx-files-into-windows-vista.aspx

But I receive the following error message:

"No message can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the requested files open. Please select another folder or try closer application that may have files open."

I have no idea why this is occuring.

I've received this error previously as well.   Any ideas?

Thanks,

Deborah

Find where the OE data folder is located.  Go to OE > Tools > Maintenance > Data Folder.
Close Outlook Express.
Navigate to the folder location and copy the file to the Vista Machine.
Make sure it is not write protected.
Then from Windows Mail, import the DBX files.

Hi war1,

Do you mean STORE folder instead of Data Folder?

Aren't the only files I require .dbx files?  I've already copied those to my Vista box and tried the import. I keep getting the error message I was talking about.

Am I missing something here?

Deborah

by: war1Posted on 2008-02-10 at 09:04:25ID: 20861653

yes, I mean "Store Folder", to be exact.

No, you need more than DBX files.  Copy the whole folder to Vista.

What else is in the Store folder? All I have there is .DBX files? I'm still not sure exactly what other files than .dbx you mean.

The are .idx and .mbx files for each folder.  There are FolderX.dbx, idx, and mdx files.  There are folders.xxx files.  There is pop3udl.dbx and other files.  Is is so hard to copy the whole folder to the Vista computer?

Hi DeborahSG,

Please follow my steps

Before you import make sure the dbx file attribute is set to achieve.

Also can check this old article for refrence for this kind of error message. It seems you missed one of the steps that i told you.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/252603/en-us

Make sure first you copy the dbx file on the hard drive and right click on dbx file --> propeties and only put a  check on archive and uncheck the rest.
