This is only partially possible.  Depending on your SMTP server, you can check logs to see whether the email was successfully sent to the server listed on the remote domain's MX listing.  Beyond that, you would only be able to confirm receipt of the message using read receipts.

I'm looking for more info than read-receipt. Lotus Notes has this capability. I'm looking for something that would work with Outlook or Exchange. Something similar to the service:
http://www.didtheyreadit.com/   with route info.
In the Notes world you can simply open the Delivery option and check in Delivery report "Trace entire path" you will receive e-mail from each server on the path telling you the progression.
I'm looking for a way to do this in the "windows world:" using, Outlook, Exchange, or a SMTP type utility.

The purpose is to test a messaage sent to a client to document the delivery path, hop times, etc., and thus explain to them why they may be having email "plumbing problems."
