Hotmail not receiving messages from regular senders

My client, a Hotmail user, has discovered that they did not receive many messages this week. These emails were sent by people who email her almost every day. Not all messages were blocked, none of the missing messages are in the Hotmail spam folder. One of the senders is a family member who sends from G-Mail, which I assume filters for viruses.

Is there any reason why Hotmail would intermittantly not receive email from known users?
