I leave it running all day and just want to know when new mail comes in, can it do that? clicking get mail does nothing.

I am sure there is a simple answer to this but I don't seem to be able to find it.
I am running Thunderbird to pick up my work emails from an Exchange 2003 server over IMAP. The only way I can get new messages is to navigate through all folders and sub-folders. It doesn't automatically download new messages for all folders.
How do I set this up?
