Webmail extensions not installing

Asked by MidlandR in Thunderbird Email Client

Tags: Mozilla, Thunderbird, 2.0.0.12

I have just installed Thunderbird 2 and want to enable access to my Hotmail account.

As a result I've downloaded two .xpi files direct to my desktop (web-mail-1-3-1, hotmail 1-2-14).  However every time I attempt to install these via Tools/Add-ons I receive the error message:

Thunderbird could not install the file at

file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Owner/Desktop/web-mail-1-3-1.xpi

because: Not a valid install package
-207

I have restarted Thunderbird as instructed and also tried re-downloading the two .xpi files required.

Can anyone help me further with this issue?Start Free Trial

Hello MidlandR,

There are two ways to install Thunderbird extensions.  Make sure to follow the directions here
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Extensions_(Thunderbird)

Hope this helps!

Hi thanks for the quick response, I followed your link and received this:

Extensions (Thunderbird
From MozillaZine Knowledge Base
There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page.

Any ideas?

MidlandR,

Are they compatible with your version of TB?  Where did you find these add-ons? I was unable to find them on the mozilla add-ons page.

03.25.2008 at 02:39PM PDT, ID: 21206524
Try this link:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Extensions_(Thunderbird)

This board is not including the last )in the link.  You may need to cut and past the URL if the above does not work.

Hi mtz1of4,

The .xpi files were downloaded from here:

http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html

03.25.2008 at 03:20PM PDT, ID: 21206805
Did you follow the directions to install the extension?  You need to download the xpi file. Then upload them with the install addon feature.

03.25.2008 at 03:33PM PDT, ID: 21206894
Yes I followed all the instructions, I've even re-installed Thunderbird but to no avail!

The .xpi files are sitting on my desktop but I keep getting the error msg every time I attempt to install them.

03.25.2008 at 03:40PM PDT, ID: 21206988
web-mail-1-3-1 and hotmail 1-2-14 may not be compatible.  You need to install webmail-1-3-1 and hotmail-1.3-x.  Can you find a later version of hotmail plugin?

03.25.2008 at 04:18PM PDT, ID: 21207395
Not a valid Install Package seems to be the Creators issue, not yours. According to
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Dev_:_Extensions_:_Extension_does_not_install anyways.

I found this zip file here, but haven't tested it.
http://groups.google.com/group/thunderbird-webmail-extension
No guarantees from me.

Reinstalling TB won't help.

According to the webmail page, you have to install Webmail first, restart tb and then you should be able to install hotmail.xpi  but if war1 is correct with needing hotmail1.3, we may be out of luck, if you can't find it.

So, to confirm, let me walk you through on Win XP, open TB, go to Tools->Add-ons, select the Install option, browse to your desktop and select the web-mail.1-3-1.xpi, if it asks you to allow install, select yes.  Restart Thunderbird.  If you still get that error message, I can't help.

03.25.2008 at 04:48PM PDT, ID: 21207562
Thanks again for the comments, I notice when looking on Google Groups that someone else is reporting the same problem as me and their post was logged today!

Therefore I am starting to think that this might be a current problem so will try again tomorrow night in case it corrects itself in time :o)

03.25.2008 at 04:54PM PDT, ID: 21207585
I thought that might have been you in the Google groups.

Hello MidlandR,

This may/may not be what you're looking for (Webmail Notifier):
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4490

It's a Firefox addon which I use to track all my webmail accounts.  If the notification icon tells me I have new mail, I just click it and it opens up whichever account(s) has new mail, into a new tab(s) for me.

All the best,
Steve

MidlandR,

I just took a look at the xpi for webmail and it looks like there were too many downloads this month, so we couldn't get a known good copy.  I'm guessing it is where the author serves it from, somehow is disabling the download of it.

The OWA xpi file I got from the google groups looks better, but again I didn't install and test it.

It looks like Steve has you on the right track with Webmail Notifier, anyway.  Except the latest couple reviews don't show it working with Hotmail, so you might need a script for it.  Or set the preferences correctly for it.

03.26.2008 at 06:23AM PDT, ID: 21211294
Thanks for today's comments, it seems logical to me that there is a download frequency issue due to the other guy's issue on Google Groups last night.

I just want to use Thunderbird for accessing my Hotmail and integration with Sunbird so hopefully I will be successful when I try later :o)

03.26.2008 at 07:52AM PDT, ID: 21212238
Woops, that's right the Webmail Notifier is for Firefox, isn't it?  I would wait until April 1st and see if the numbers get reset.

03.26.2008 at 12:01PM PDT, ID: 21215040
Webmail Notifier *does* work with Hotmail.

S :)

03.26.2008 at 12:54PM PDT, ID: 21215527
Yes Steve,  but does it work with Thunderbird?  It didn't look like it.

but it does look like a great add-on.  I would be able to have it check my different web mail accounts then open each one in a new Tab to log in and read.

I believe what Midland R is trying to do though is have TB access, download and then read the emails in Thunderbird, not in the web interface.

03.27.2008 at 03:01AM PDT, ID: 21219801
That is correct and my attempts this morning failed again unfortunately, it looks like I need to wait till 1st April :o(

So I'm right to assume that there is a monthly download limit on firefox or what is the situation regarding them?

I am a Firefox noob but also really impressed so will look to enhance my experience with it a lot more.

Howabout "Web2Pop"?
http://www.jmasoftware.com/english/products/web2pop/support.html

It acts as a proxy between your e-mail client (Thunderbird) and whatever webmail accounts you wish to configure it with.

"So I'm right to assume that there is a monthly download limit on firefox or what is the situation regarding them?"

No, there is no monthly download limit on Firefox, but the Server that is hosting the extensions YOU desire might have a download cap.
So, somehow we are getting invalid xpi files.

Wait, I just found these from the page of Questions on above site.  Looks like you can get good versions here.
http://groups.google.com/group/thunderbird-webmail-extension/files

Perhaps he was just hosting them on a server he stopped paying?

Run them through your AV of course.

OK mtx1of4 I understand what you are saying, thanks for that and thanks Steve for your help on this too.

I will try out your recommendations tonight, I really appreciate your continued help with this :o)
