Thunderbird stores mail using two files. One has no extension and the other has an .msf (Mail Summary File) extension. The file with no extension stores the actual mail in standard mbox format (concatenated and stored as plain text in a single file) whereas the .msf file stores the index of the mail.

The files can be found in windows under:
Vista
C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\
XP/2000
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\

Now to import thunderbird mail into Outlook Express there's a few things you must do:
1) Go to your thunderbird profile and copy all the files of your mail that have no extensions to a temp directory such as a temp folder on your desktop.

2) In outlook express you must create a folder with the exact same names as those files you copied. If everything was in Inbox then you shouldn't have to worry about it, but if you have a file called "Johnsons Mail" you will need to create it in outlook express.

3) Those files without extensions that you copied to the temporary folder, you need to rename them with the extension .mbx

4) Now you have to get a freeware application that will convert .mbx to .eml which is a format outlook express can read. It can be found here: http://people.freenet.de/ukrebs/mbox2eml.html

5) Once you've converted the mail to .eml all you will need to do is drag and drop those *.eml files into outlook express into their matching folders.

I use OE and I often receive attachments that I cannot open.  I called some of the senders and asked what kind if files they sent.  Their replies included .jpg and .wmv, but I could not open them.  So I saved the files to my desktop, then right-clicked and looked at the "properties" and they read "Thunderbird File".

I chose "Open With" and tried all the options and they still would not open.

Hello NewsShooter,

You can open picture files like jpg in your browser, like Firefox or Internet Explorer, or with a Irfanview program.
http://www.irfanview.com

Make sure your program that you want to open the file with is installed in your computer.  Then right click on the file and select Open With. Select the program. Check Always use this program...  Click OK.

.WMV is a Windows Media Video file.  You can open it with Windows Media Player, Roxio Easy Media Creator, or web browser with the Windows Media Player plugin

Hope this helps!

NewsShooter,

Are you downloading the Attachments or the emails?

When you open an email with an attachment, do you have the option to Save Attachment?

Sounds like you may have Thunderbird installed, yes?  "Thunderbird files"  sounds to me like one of two possibilities.
1. Either your Administrator of the computer has Thunderbird set as Default and you are actually saving the email.
or
2. Someone accidentally set the file association of the type of file you are downloading to the wrong Program.

Couple quick questions to see if we can pinpoint the problem.

What Operating system are you running?
When you save the attachment, what file extension is shown? Typically the last three letters following the . after the name of the file.

Are you Viewing File Extensions? Open My Documents, go to Tools->Folder Options->View tab and under Advanced Settings De-select "Hide extensions for known file types"

After that we may be able to pinpoint a solution.
