HELP!!!!

My outgoing SMTP Server used to work fine until three days ago (I did nothing).  Now all I get is this (no matter who I send to except for internal emails):

Is it just your account and nobody else? Is your mail forwarded to another account? Do you have a vacation message active?

Hmm..
Is kbearstudios.no-ip.biz your server? Atleast this is the one generating the mail loop.

Are your sure you haven't defined your own mail server as a mail relay? It seems that it tries to deliver the mail to itself.

Check your xmail config's server.tab file for the variable DefaultSMTPGateways.

If you have this trouble for some domains it might also be a mail routing problem. Check smtpw.tab to see if there's something wrong.

You should also double+triple check if there are any modified config files during the last few days.

its a problem at your ISP who hosts your SMTP Server. There is a mail loop, I have seen these b4. They should be able to fix it. kbearstudios.no-ip.biz doesnt sound like correct domain, it should be kbearstudios.com or something like that.

Well,
So far, no help here.  Everybody denies responsibility (MX backup service, ISP, and DNS hosting service).  I'll pay cash to fix this if need be.  Tisi is the result from a dig MX (note that kbearstudios.no-ip.biz is no longer even listed):

My web-site still works.  I'm very confused, but it seems almost malicious.  This worked fine before.  This is my server.tab (which I probably shouldn't publish, but what the heck, I'm dead anyway, and there's no passwords here):

KellyMcT,
I'm assuming from this info you have given that your mail server has ip address 4.46.194.148.
In your server.tab you have the following setting:
"DefaultSMTPGateways"   "kbearstudios.no-ip.biz"

This means that outgoing mail is to be sendt through kbearstudios.no-ip.biz which is defined above as:
kbearstudios.no-ip.biz. 60      IN      A       4.46.194.148

This is why you're getting the mail loop. Try to use mail1.no-ip.com there instead.

Good luck!

Lars

by: larstrPosted on 2003-08-18 at 15:11:07ID: 9177009

How are you doing?

Did you understand my previous post? What I meant was that you could put the following line in server.tab instead of the one you've got:
"DefaultSMTPGateways"   "mail1.no-ip.com"

You would then use your isp's mail server as a smart host (relay server) instead of your server forwarding the mail to itself that forward to itself that....

Or you could also skip using a smart host and send the mail directly.

Lars

by: KellyMcTPosted on 2003-08-19 at 00:04:48ID: 9178997

I'm not sure I've given enough Info.  I'm on a Dynamic IP.  It's always wrorked finr for bot my wwbsites and email.

This is the set-up:
MyDomain.com:
Using your own mail servers
MX1: kbearstudios.no-ip.biz (distance 1)
MX2: mail1.no-ip.com (distance 5)
MX3: mail2.no-ip.com (distance 10)

I then use a Reflector service which is supposed to resolve my IP to my dynamic, as well as do a port forwarding (because 25 is blocked by my ISP):
kbearstudios.no-ip.biz => kbearstudios.no-ip.biz 8025
kbearstudios.no-ip.com => kbearstudios.no-ip.biz 8025

I then use a port forwarder on the mail server which redirects all requests for  8025 to 127.0.0.1:25.

This all use to work fine.  I'm just trying to find out who to point the finger at.

dig MX kbearstudios.no-ip.biz now returrns this, though, which is not only different than above; it just looks plain wrong.

So you have got a service installed locally listening to port 25 that will forward the connection to port 8025 on mail1.no-ip.com? On what port are you running your mail server?

I'm not familiar with Reflector, but I understand it's a service similar to 'nc -l -p 25 remotehost 8025'. When you try to telnet to your local Reflector port, do you get a response from the remote server?

Are your sure you're hitting the correct port (the reflector service) on your local server? It looks from your first message that the mail server tries to deliver the mail to the local service port served by your local xmail service.

Stangely enough, I was able to get it to work by disabling my SMTPGateway, and setting it up as a local relay.  Everything else stayed the same.  This email stuff is strange.  I'm a prorgammer with 22 yrs excperience, and a pretty good Solaris and Linux Sysadmin.  But this stuff still eludes me.  Seems like it eludes many of the experts as well.

Well, it looks like an almost.  I can now send an receive msgs to/from my network to anywhere.  Unfortunately none of the remote accounts can connect to my SMTP server!  This is the message they get:

Task 'kbearstudios - Sending' reported error
(0x80042109) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your
outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to
receive this message, contact your server
administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

So now what?  I'm just about ready to take a sledgehammer to the E3500 hosting this mess.

Why do they need to contact your smtp server directly?

Isn't the point with reflector that they can deliver mail through mail1.no-ip.com and it will then be sent to your server via the reflector service?

And as smtp (port 25) is closed by your isp they would get the message you're quoting above when trying to connect directly to port 25 of your server.

Or you might use a sledgehammer ;-)

If they're not using your server directly, but rather use mail1.no-ip.com, you will lose the "pop authentication before relay" functionality. They are better off using the smtp server of their local isp that would probably allow them to relay by default.

As a limited knowledge expert can I make a suggestion? I dont know whether you connect by telephone line or cable etc But has anybody re routed you with informing you? I say this because when I changed to Broadband I was notified by the ISP that I was connected. I couldnt connect and tried all sorts to make it work. The ISP constantly informed me that I was connected. Eventually I got the telephone company to test the lines for me. This went on for three months until I took the matter to the top of the phone company. Their engineers arrived and could not connect with their equipment. They left and went back to the telephone exchange and returned an hour later. They retested the line and could connect. I then tried and connected immediately.

The problem turned out to be due to the fact that the ISP had requested the phone company to connect me up which they did. The problem is that about 10 years ago I was picking up radio and tv on the telephone. The engineers tried phones with different wavelengths which didnt help and then the problem suddenly vanished. It was discovered when I changed to broadband that while my telephone number had remained the same the engineers had re-routed my phone line via a different route which meant that the Broadband was connected to a disconnected line. In order to connect me the engineers had to change the "jumpers" in a junction box half a mile away which would not normally be used by my line.

Dont believe all that the ISP may tell you. Keep on at them and demand they sort it out. From my reading of your error messages your messages appear to be  stopping dead at your ISP
Hope this helps
