Hotmail popper:
http://www.boolean.ca/hotp
still works if you are an older 'valued' customer, but generally, MS and others are trying to make money out of their email service.
http://mrpostman.sourcefor
works with hotmail AT THE MOMENT.
The problem with all of this type of solution is that if Hotmail changes its web interface, there is a chance that this web->POP gateway may no longer work. Normally when this happens, then an update is produced fairly quickly, and you merely need to install the latest version.

If hotmail doesn't provide POP orSMTP services, it doesn't matter which client you use.
Generally the Mozilla suite/Mozilla Mail, or The Thunderbird mail client will do what most people want from an e-mail client. Free.
