Question

Server Interrupted Error - Company Wide

Asked by: dharvell

While attempting to check e-mail ALL of my users are receiving the following error:

Task 'Name Of Task - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F): 'The connection to the server was interrupted.  If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or ISP.'

The server is a Fedora Core 5 box running Postfix and Dovecot.  We are using SpamAssassin.

Some other tidbits of information include:  webmail seems to work using "squirrelmail".  If I telnet to the machine's port 25 and port 110, everything seems to report back normally (no strange errors).  DNS checks seem to report that all servers are working correctly.

Any ideas of what I can check to remedy this situation?

Thank you.

Update:

Disabled antivirus and spamassassin.  This did not change the situation.

One other thing of note... when attempting to connect to the e-mail server with Thunderbird, no error is given.  Instead, the communication seems to hang at, "Connected, verifying username and password".

Again, any ideas would be great.

Another update:

Reformatted / rebuilt the e-mail server.  This did not work.
Strung a new ethernet cable to server.  This did not work.
Installed a new ethernet adapter into the server.  This did not work.
Reset all routers / DHCP servers in network.  This did not work.

Another point... Mozilla Thunderbird gives the message:  "Server contacted, sending login information" and stalls.

Outlook still gives "Server Was Interrupted" message.

Help is still needed and appreciated!

I would guess a Firewall problem. If there is firewall involved check with the people who manage it, or temporarily disable the firewall and see if things start to work.

R-K -

I suspected the same thing, so I checked the firewall settings.  The interesting thing is, people from outside the network, as well as within our LAN are receiving the same error message.  Our firewall is set to allow everything from within our LAN, so the firewall is becoming less of a possibility.

I read and followed all of the possible solutions in that Microsoft article.  None of the suggestions were of any help.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I  FIGURED OUT THE SOLUTION...

The POP3 server (Dovecot) automatically updated itself.  When the auto-update occured it overwrote my /etc/dovecot.conf file, commenting out the following line:

#pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv

Uncommenting the line solved the issue.

What an obscure problem... ugh.  Anyway, sorry... no points awarded. :(
