Outlook 2003 - The address list could not be displayed

Asked by HammettG in Email Software, Outlook Groupware Software

I have a situation where I physically moved about 8 XP and W2K Pro clients, from old office to new. From an old Windows Domain to a new 2003 Server Domain. In the process, the clients create a new profile in XP/W2K, for the user of the exact same name, but with a new suffix - like the name of the new domain.

Ex:
Old profile name: John.OldDomain
New profile name:John.NewDomain

Of course now, all the users data is in the old profile, and needs to be moved to the new profile. This will contain their desktop background and icons, files and folders, My Documents, Favorites, Cookies, pictures and music files, and most importantly E-mail Outlook 2003 (POP3/SMTP).

After moving the files into the new profile, by copying from old to new, the users Outlook email ends up with two accounts, one it created, and one you just copied into this new profile (one for each .PST file). So I can import the messages and contacts, from the new into the old Outlook profile, and reset the email account settings if needed, but I still keep getting this message when I click on the To: Field of a new email I'm trying to address:

The address list could not be displayed. Check to make sure... and so forth, and there is no way of displaying the adress book without going to the Adress List in the lower left of the Outlook screen and clicking a user, and right clicking to make a message to that user.

Some of the cients are running an old PC 6 years old, with W2K Pro (256 MB RAM) and Office 2003. Some have realtively new equipment running XP (1GB RAM) and Office 2003.

How do I regain proper Outlook Address List functionaity?
