Question

Outlook 2007 message with attachment hangs after hitting send

Asked by: nstarhelpdesk

I have at two users with Office 2007 who when sending an email with Outlook 07 that has an attachment the message will not close automatically after hitting send. The message will send, but they have to kill the whole application process to get the sent message closed. They are both XP SP2 machines, they had an Office 2003 OEM install before, but I did a full uninstall of 2003 and then ran the installation from a volume license of Office 2007. I looked at a similar question to this one but his didn't involve attachements, and the box that he said was the solution is checked for my users. Also they have a managed install of Symantec Version 11. I'm hoping to find a solution that doesn't involve reinstalling the Office suite but that's probably next. Thanks in advance.

Hello nstarhelpdesk,

1. Reset the Outlook toolbar template. With Outlook close, do a search for and rename outcmd.dat file. Restart Outlook. Do the same for outlprnt file.

In Windows XP Outcmd.dat is located in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder. In Windows Vista, file is located in C:\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook folder. It is a hidden file, so you have to unhide hidden files. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

2. Register an important Outlook files. If using Windows xP, go to Start > Run and type regsvr32 OLE32.DLL and hit OK.

If using Vista and you get an error, run regsvr32.exe from an elevated command prompt. To get an elevated command prompt, right-click on the "Command Prompt" shortcut and select "Run as Administrator".

3. If no joy, an addin could be corrupt. Disable Outlook Addins.  Go to Tools > Trust Center > Add-Ins disable the addins.

If Outlook does not open, go to Start > Run - and type outlook /safe

4. Check if an external program running in the background is interfering with Outlook. Check Firewall, antivirus and other security programs, Yahoo and Google toolbars, and desktop search programs. Disable these programs one at a time.

5. Create a new Outlook profile.

6. If no joy, reinstall Outlook.  Go to Add/Remove Programs and highlight Microsoft Office. Click on Install/Uninstall.  A menu will pop allowing you to choose repair or reinstall.

Hope this helps!

I went through all the steps recommended but it still didn't solve the problem. Was there some file that didn't get deleted after the uninstall? Thanks.

Did you disable Symantec Antivirus check of outgoing emails?

Did you create a new Outlook profile?

Also - check your updates to see if you have had KB946983 installed. There is a common issue with this patch that causes problems similar to what you are describing.  In Add/Remove programs, make sure the "show updates" box is ticked, and look for Security Update for Outlook 2007 (KB946983) (usually under Microsoft Office 2007). Remove it and try again

I am having the exact same issue.

However, running outlook in safemode (outlook /safe) results in it working just fine. Closing outlook and then reopening it normal it does not work.

To make sure its clear, when you send an attachment the email window stays open and the "Send" button stays depressed, however the email gets sent just fine. Waiting a while then closing the message window works, but is not a solution. Neither is running outlook in safe mode. This is happening on 2 of 50 machines, all WinXP Office 2k7 latest patches.
