How to fix SMTP problem in Exchange 2003

Hello,

Last days I was trying to install an antispam software and also configuring IMAP4 to permit clients remote connection to check their mails. Antispam software worked properly and also IMAP, but I was unable to grant access to the clients to relay mails to Exchange. Then, I tried a lot of different configurations till mail was working in both ways.
After that I unistall antispam and I tried to go back to the beginning, without success.
Unluckyly I unistalled SMTP service from Windows component, after reading on Microsoft KB that this is a suicide.
Now I reinstalled SMTP, but I don't know it appears now on IIS Manager.
At this moment I am able to receive, but not send.

Is there a way without reinstalling OS to get SMTP work into exchange?? Or maybe better, a way to reinstall only system state from ntbackup to recover the server to its original state??

By the way, I am running Windows SBS 2003 Std.
I will really appreciate any help with this, and this is why I am offering as much points as I can.

Thanks in advanced!

if you have a good copy of back up, try restore from "Directory Service Restore Mode"

Have you restarted the server to see if the SMTP server exists in Exchange System Manager?  If not, go into Servers, then expand the server - go into Protocols, then SMTP to see if the Default SMTP Virtual Server exists.  If it doesn't, add a new one there.

Yes I have a good backup done with NTBACKUP, but this server is at 2000km from me right now. I will take a look about how to restore a backup on Directory Service Restore Mode. I can try through ILO.....
I restarted the server, but the most weird thing is that I have now SMTP virtual server in both applications, IIS and Exchange. Before doing anything to the server, there was only SMTP virtual server in Exchange.
Sounds like the restart did the trick.
Probably, but now I must fix it and I don't know exactly what to do. The actual situation is that I am able to send mails internally, and also receive mails from outside. What I can not is send any mail to outside.
You said you uninstalled "antispam".  Did you install it again?  What is it exactly?  Is there a firewall setting or antispam program that's blocking Port 25?
Yeap, I unistalled it, but I diidn't install it again. To be precise, the antispam is GFI MailEssentials. And there is not an ICS/firewall installed in the server, only my default gateway in the network filter connections, but smtp, imap, imaps and related ports are open.
I guess the network is working properly and the problem belongs only to OS configuration and Exchange (and my brilliant idea to touch it when it was working...).
Check your default settings for SMTP

1.  Make sure there's an IP address assigned inside Exchange System Manager under the SMTP properties on the general tab.
2.  Check your Access Control Settings under the Access tab.  Make sure the Anonymous Access box has a check in it.
3.  Check the Full qualified domain name under the Delivery tab.  Click the Check DNS button to make sure the domain name is valid
There is an IP address asigned in both SMTP virtual servers (IIS and Exchange).
Access control is set with anonymous access and windows integrated.
FQDN is my outside name server, but I don't know if I have to set this name or maybe my internal name.

Also there is something interesting to say. In IIS Manager, in SMTP virtual server properties there is a tab called LDAP Routing, which lets me create an LDAP connection. I set it up to connect against the schema Exchange LDAP Service. Maybe I should disable this LDAP connection. This tab doesn't exist in SMTP virtual server of Exchange Manager.
FQDN should be the outside servername - that sounds correct.

Refer to this link and check your settings.  Otherwise, I'm not sure what else to tell you rather than to restore from backup.

Has anyone done a backup restore on Directory Service Restore Mode? Is it safe?
