Question

FTP error 12031 - The connection with the server was reset.

Asked by: NoraWil

Since a few day FTP connections from my computer to FTP-sites are no longer possible. I always encounter the same error: 12031 - The connection with the server was reset.
I get this error when I use the format ftp://name:password@ftpsite.com, but also when trying to make a connection with FTP Pro and when I try the Microsoft IE7 wizard to analyze connection problems.

So there seems to be a connection, but is shut down immediately.

I shut down the Firewall and uninstalled McAfee antivirus completely. This didn't solve anything.

Any ideas?? Thank you.

Hi there

Just a few questions I need to ask, before we can pinpoint the problem...

Can you telnet to port 21 or 20 of the server your are trying to connect to?
What sort of connection type are you currently using? Analogue modem or Broadband?
How long after connecting to the ftp site does it take before you get the error message display?

by: NoraWilPosted on 2007-06-26 at 08:31:55ID: 19364741

Hello,

Thanks. I'll try to answer all your questions.

When I Telnet on port 21, I make a very short connection with the FTP-server (less than a second) and then the connection breaks off.

I can't Telnet on port 20. I get an error: "Can't connect to host on port 20. Connection failed" (This is a translated message. I use a Dutch Windows version)
I use a Broadband connection.
All error show up in less than 1 second.
Today I reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP 2 from scratch, installed all patches, but still can't connect to the FTP-server.

Okeydokey

Just a few more questions...

Are you using any sort of firewall or anti-virus software that could potentially be blocking port 21?
Have you tried disabling them?

by: NoraWilPosted on 2007-06-26 at 15:55:02ID: 19368498

Hello,

At the moment I did the Telnet's on ports 20 and 21, the router was disabled (the internet cable was plugged in directly in our SBS 2003 server). Group Policy was changed to disable the firewall (on all workstations Windows XP Pro was complaining about not finding any active firewalls). Windows XP Pro was just reinstalled and Antivirus wasn't installed yet.

okay try this out...

In CuteFtp try doing the following

Go to Site manager> (Right click on your ftp host and click on) Properties>Click on "Type" tab>Find "Data connection type:" and change "Use global settings" to "Use PORT".

The problem you are experiencing seems to be a general problem with CuteFTP.

Hope this helps you out!?

Thanks for your help. Your suggestion did help other people in the past, but unfortunaly not me.
I don't think my problem is CuteFTP related. When I try to download a file and de external website uses FTP to deliver the file, the same error occurs. I can only download from sites using HTTP.

Ok... back to the drawing board ;)

Can you ftp from any other machine on your network?

by: NoraWilPosted on 2007-06-28 at 08:08:31ID: 19381453

Hello,

Thanks. I think I can narrow the problem. I tried the following things:

1. telnet ftp.globalscape.com 21 on a few of the workstations --> The same error on all machines
2. telnet ftp.globalscape.com 21 on the server (from behind router)  --> succesful (no errors at all)
3. plug the internet cable directly in my workstation (with no router) --> full FTP access in Dreamweaver and CuteFTP
So I think the problem must be network related. I can make FTP connections from the Server (with or without router, with or without software firewall installed).

A far as I can imagine the most suspected element is the Windows SBS 2003 software firewall. I disabled it completely in Group Policies (in the domain profile as well as in the standard profile), ran GPUpdate. Still no success.
I also rechecked all  cables with a cable tester. No problems there too.

Are you using a router to get onto the internet? Have you defined any access lists on it that could possibly be resticting ftp access to other clients on the network?

by: NoraWilPosted on 2007-07-02 at 08:52:31ID: 19404541

Hi,
Sorry for the late response (been away for the weekend).
Yes we use a router (connected via the second NIC) to the server. The workstations are via a switch connected to the first NIC of the server.
So the server is behind the router, but CuteFTP works without any problem on the server. The server seems to block FTP from the workstations. I don't think a firewall is responsible for that blocking, because disabling the firewall completely doesn't solve the problem.

by: SynergyAssocPosted on 2007-07-02 at 15:03:49ID: 19407284

I'm having exactly the same issue myself. In fact, ran some interesting tests...

Firstly, ran NetMon to see what's happening on the packet level...
The host established an outbound connection on Port 21 to the remote FTP server.
The remote FTP server responds and (after a few negotiating transmissions) sends a RESET flag that terminates the session.

Interestingly, if I VPN to the SBS server from the workstation, I can then establish the FTP connection.
I'm also able to FTP to other workstations on the subnet. This would indicate that there's something particular about the configuration of RRAS on the internal interface on the server.

Problem solved!!!!
After spending hours and hours trying to find the solution for my problem I almost found by 'accident' the following webpage:
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=53&forumid=11&tpage=1&view=topic&postid=60954#68173
There Eriq Neale, a Microsoft MVP, suggested this:
"Let's do this:
In network connections, right-click on each of the adapters and select Properties. In the general tab where the NIC is listed, click the Configure button next to the NIC. Click on the Advanced tab and scroll through the property list looking for Receive Side Scaling and disable it if it's present. Also confirm if the NICs, though listed as HP NICs, aren't actually BroadComm NICs instead."

Disabling  RSS on the server Nic's openend FTP on our workstations.
So Eriq Neale is the one who deserves the points here. Cause he's not on Experts Exchange I'll give the points to Nautilian who showed a lot of patience trying to help me out.

by: NoraWilPosted on 2007-07-03 at 02:28:16ID: 19409723

In addition to my previous posting:
- There's no problem when Receive Side Scaling is enabled on the Internet Nic on the server
- FTP is impossible on our workstations with RSS enabled on de Network Nic on the server.

by: NautilianPosted on 2007-07-09 at 11:03:52ID: 19447295

Awesome! Glad you got things sorted, and thank you for the points!!!! :)

by: MsElfinPosted on 2008-11-12 at 03:45:25ID: 22938525

"Let's do this:

The above suggestion sorted out my FTP problem. Client PCs could not connect to external FTP sites, the server was running SBS 2003, two NICs, and RRAS. I thought it was RRAS at first, but tried this on  the broadcom cards and it sorted the problem out instantly :)
