FTP mput preserving permissions of files

Everytime I FTP from one server to another, I lose the original permissions of the files.
The files on the target server is different than from the source server.

How do I keep the permissions the same?
Going from HP UX server to LINUX Suse 10.0 server.
I'm using mput * to ftp the file.s
