Question

(10053, [10053] Software caused connection abort) for dial up customer

Asked by: MattShadbolt

Hi Guys
I've recently moved web hosts from a local company to Cachefly to host our application patches. Basically, our clients connect to Cachefly, download a small patch list text file then download the newest patch - normally 400K in size.
Since we have moved hosts I have a bunch of dial up users who cannot download their patch files. The patch list text file is being downloaded, however when it gets to the patches them selves the connection is timing out. This is happening for clients on various ISP's and different AV providers. We have tried turning off the firewalls and AV but no luck. When we enter the download URL directly into their browser the download happens fine.
As you can see in the log below, the clients are getting 10-30% of the file and then disconnecting with a socket error 10053.
Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Matt

The error is a socket error.  Most information I've seen on it points to the buffer size not being large enough to handle the data.  If you examine the problem clients, you may find some common misconfiguration among them, but I understand it will not be easy to get that data.

I believe your best option is to contact Cachefly's support.  Explain that this only began happening once you moved your patches to their distribution network.  They may have a solution ready for you.

Hi routinet.
I've attempted to troubleshoot this issue on all of the clients reconfiguring the MTU, done winsock resets and various other fixed to no avail. I've also contacted CacheFly and they dont believe it is a problem with their end. The worrying part is that the users are using different ISPs, different AV products and are at different Windows SP levels - there is nothing in common with each of them!
Cheers,
Matt

Is that log file from your server or a client?  Is the error being generated at the server side or the client?

by: MattShadboltPosted on 2008-12-01 at 22:56:32ID: 23074906

client side - CacheFly obviously wouldn't give me their logs...

by: routinetPosted on 2008-12-02 at 01:35:14ID: 23075472

What application is generating the log?  Is there any commonality in how long the download goes before aborting?

by: MattShadboltPosted on 2008-12-07 at 17:31:31ID: 23118231

hi routinet. The application is an in house application using IPWorks as the downloader. Not really any commonality - it seems to fail betweek 10% - 30%.

by: routinetPosted on 2008-12-10 at 20:40:04ID: 23145794

I'm thinking it is something between your downloader software and the particular way the CacheFly operates.  Both function properly on their own, but together they cause problems.  It is possible to replace IPWorks as your download agent?

by: MattShadboltPosted on 2008-12-10 at 22:01:14ID: 23146089

no not possible at all - and for the other 3500+ customers there aren't any issues. about 25% of that figure are on dialup and they don't have any issues - so 6 out of 1000 clients aren't bad... still though, I need to resolve it!

by: routinetPosted on 2008-12-10 at 23:52:54ID: 23146448

So this is only failing for 6 out of 1000?  Then this is an issue with their systems.  There's not much to be done about that.  It could be literally *anything* on their systems causing the breakdown.  For all you know, these systems have trojans, spyware, etc.

Still, if you're dead set on investigating it, I recommend starting by adding more traces to your debug code.  Specifically, you want to track every little thing that happens between line 1 and 5 of your log shown below.  If there's something in your code that can keep it alive, you'll find it there.

Another alternative is to detect the failed download and try to restart it automatically.  This kind of routine should be abortable by the user, though...

hi routinet - yeah, I had a feeling not much more could be done. The error logging is already as verbose as it allows and the code has an included "download manager" built in so it will retry the connection.

Although not resolved, I will assign the points.

Cheers,
Matt
