WinXP: Node Type changing by itself ???

Asked by infosys3 in Peer to Peer, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Internet Protocols

Tags: node, type, dhcp

Have a new HP laptop, XPP, SP2.  User has a home network with wireless router which hands out DHCP 192.168.1.x.  Two printers are setup as IP printers (192.168.1.200 & 201).  All normal stuff.   Here's my issue:  User said he couldn't print.  After investigation, he couldn't print becuase he couldn't see the network or the printers.  I banged my head against the wall for several hours until I noticed that the "Node type" on his laptop was "peer-to-peer".  I found MS KB903267 which solved the problem.

However, the above sceniero has now happened twice.  Soooooo....somehow the Node type is being changed.  The user is computer illerate, and he says he didn't do anything.  The only thing I did was to add a HP 7310 all-in-one printer for him.

Next, when I did KB903267 the node type is now "unknown".   I check my personal laptop which I connect to lots of different networks, and the Node type is "hybrid".

Questions:
1.  What is the "best" node type for a home network where the router hands out DHCP, and
2. How do I reset the node type to B (for example), and
3. Any idea how the node type can change???

Many thanks in advance for your insight and cooperation.
