All workgroup names on four computers are the same - MSHOME
Drive mappings - I had to re-create drive mapping on M to E, P, and L - but first those three computers showed up in My Network Places on M; Q has never showed up in M's My Network Places.
I don't know what authentication is or how to see if it is happening.
Yes, M is definitely a new disk (from scratch) on which I had to re-create the user account (though I was able to restore My Documents and some other files that had been saved)
Originally (eight years ago) computers did not all see each other but in the intervening years a repair guy installing another hard drive got all the computers to see each other. I don't know what he had to do.

Check workgroup names on the various machines and make sure they're all the same. You might have to re-create the drive mapping to Q on computer M after you are able to see Q. Is there any sort of authentication happening? It's possible that M was rebuilt, which would mean the user accounts no longer exist - what was done originally, if anything, to get the E, P, L, and M machines to see each other?
