Indeed this is do-able, but not the ideal for me. I'd prefer to be able to block all required ports or some other way of targeting the protocol...

Browse All TopicsHi experts,
We have a problem with night shift workers streaming content over TVU, Sopcast etc which results in the bandwidth one of our Internet connections being completely consumed by the peer to peer feature of TVU player and the like. Whilst I have blocked the IPs and websites I have found for TVU and Sopcast et al, they still somehow manage to get through. I suspect this is because being peer to peer, it uses random port numbers and multiple IP addresses.
Does anyone know what main port numbers or IPs I could block - or any other way of preventing TVU and other such streaming?
Thanks
Jon

From the FAQ:
Q2 Media Player played but get the Server busy? error message?
Clear the proxy settings in your Media Player and clear IE proxy settings. We cant play the stream if you set a proxy.
Note: Sometimes, you must clear the IE proxy settings, if you dont clear it, you may not play the stream even if you have cleared the proxy in Media Player. It must be a bug in Microsofts software.
Q4 Why I can not watch the channel with the good quality as I think?
We use the P2P technology to transfer the media content. That means when you get media content from other nodes, you also act as a service node to others. If your firewall prohibit you from connecting to other nodes, you can not get the data from other nodes and other nodes can not get the date from you. So please open the required port in your firewall. SopCast use TCP port: 3900-3920. Open these ports for SopCast.exe in your firewall.
Ergo, force your users through a proxy or block tcp ports 3900-3920.

The sure-fire way to do this is to block all unnecessary outbound connections from workstations at the firewall and implement a proxy.
