The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows IP address conflict peer to peer connection

I am attempting to fix a friends laptop with a strange problem. This friend is living with us and is using our wireless network. The laptop comes up every minute or two with the error message: "Windows - System Error. There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network". I am very familiar with networking and manage my home network of 3 laptops and 5 PCs which run from my home, my son's trailer next door, and my mother-in-law's mobile home on the other side of us, all wireless. We do not DHCP, all PCs/Laptops have manually assigned IP addresses. I assigned an IP to the laptop in question. Once when the laptop lost connectivity, I noticed that the laptop was connected to my wireless router as a peer to peer connection, all my other PCs/Laptops connect as a wireless network connection. If I continually refresh the the list that this laptop sees in the "Choose a wireless network" window, it occasionally will show two connections for my wireless router, one as a wireless network, and one as a computer-to-computer network. I am now sure that this is the source of the IP conflict. If I connect to the computer-to-computer network, I get no accees to anything, but IP address conflict goes away. When I connect to the wireless network, I can connect to the internet and the local network, but I get the continual IP address conflict, and intermittent drops if I try to do anything that needs a continual connection. I believe that some peer-to-peer software was installed on this laptop at one time and it allows the laptop to see my network as computer-to-computer. I have uninstalled all unnecessary software, removed and re-added all the available network adapters, but to no avail. I am guessing that there is some sort of network software/setting/registry entry that is allowing this to occur. I have searched high and low for an answer and find none, so I am here looking for answers from my old friends.  :)

TIA - Jim
