quota management for internet traffic on LAN

Tags: any, na, na, quota management for internet traffic on LAN
Hi,

I have 4 students in my house and we go through our ADSL quota within 7 days of each billing cycle.  Each student has their own laptop/computer and students will change overtime.

What i am after is either software/hardware that can allow each student say 5GB quota of downloads a month and then stops them access or reduce to a very slow speed.

It is a peer-peer network, i do not want to install any software on the student machines.  I have access to another computer so can maybe run linux or windows xp on that machine dedicated for this purpose.

I do not want to run anything like active directory as the client machines are not mine.

any suggestions would be fantastic, a dont like being shaped on adsl2.

Regards

i use a router/software package made by mikrotik.   I deal with cisco day in and out but for smaller/(less costly) functions you can't beat them.  You can download the routerOS platform that will run on your pc or you can purchase a routerboard 150 that has 5 layer 3 ports for 80 bucks or so.  And with minimal conf (you will need mangle rules to mark packets from each pc and then build a queue tree to allow only your specified amount of traffic.) after which they will no longer be allowed access out wan connection.  This can also allow you to prioritize traffic and rate limit apps (like p2p) to a given bandwidth.  If you need more info feel free to ask>

also, don't quite know your setup, but it would be best if you replaced your existing router with this one and bridge your dsl modem to the mikrotik.  if this is impossible, the mikrotik can operate as a bridge that will allow you to pass traffic though (2 interfaces) and it will only perform the traffic shaping/QoS/policing that you are asking for.  But as i said, this is a great router so don't be shy about using it as your primary router (you could also vlan out the pc's so they don't have anymore access to each other than you want them to have).

ohh, just say another part of your question.  you can stop them cold, reduce their speeds, futher limit them to only a certian amount afterward per day, or even charge them per minute or MB for everything over( and you can make them pay with a credit card before there allowed access!!)   Just some ideas<>
