Question

Utorrent unable to connect

Asked by: snowcraig

I am having trouble with Utorrent.  I recently completely reformatted and reloaded two machines at our office with Windows XP professional (same CD on both).  After the reload, I installed Utorrent on one of the machines (an emachines desktop).  It works perfectly, no problems.  However, I tried to load Utorrent on the second machine (a Vaio laptop) and it won't function.  It never loads any nodes, peers or trackers.  The requested files shows up in the downloads window, but it won't do anything after that.   The issue isn't that it is running slow, its just not running period.   I checked windows firewall, and utorrent is checked under exceptions.  Both machines are running Avast anti-virus, so I don't see that problem there since it seems to be working on the emachine.  One caveat is that the Vaio took much more in the way of downloading of drivers to get it back online after the reload than did the emachine.  Could I have missed something?  Are there certain networking services I need to install?  Thanks in advance!!!!

this will be because your firewall is having trouble NAT-ing packets for your two Utorrent sessions.

best way around it is to pick two different connection ports as defined in the Utorrent preferences menu ie; 64010 & 64011 for the two computers. Then set you firewall to port forward these to ports to the IP address of the two separate computers.

This is how I manage running 5 Utorrent sessions from my network.

if you need help with configuring your firewall , post your make and model and i'll see what i can do.

Do you have internet connection sharing  on Vaio laptop) how does it connect to the internet?
wireless or wired?
µTorrent is shipped as a single stand-alone compressed executable file,
and does not require installation
have you tried simply downloading a new version?
Do you have s&d spybot installed?
s&d has settings to prevent the running of p2p.
If this is a newly formatted laptop all updates installed?

Try disabling your software firewalls and then give it a go. This way we can determine if the issue lies within the configuration of your windows firewall or any other software firewall you may be using.

Well, I got the torrent to download, but I can't get a green connection light at the bottom of utorrent.  We recently switched from DSL to a cable modem (switching ISPs in the procees).  Both connections are still hot in the building though.  When I run through the DSL, everything works fine, green light, ports forwarded, etc.  However, when switching to the cable modem, I end up with a red light, and am not able to forward ports.  It will still download, just not very quickly.  any suggestions?  Does the cable modem and my router just 'not get along'?  I am using a Lynksys router.

also there is an option you should turn on, the encrypt traffic function, a lot of ISP's block P2P traffic, this function will get around this.

But sounds like your Utorrent is in passive mode, so you wont get the benefit of the hive download. please refer to my earlier post about making changes to your linksys router. http://portforward.com/ has plenty of guides and how to's.
