perhaps I should ask a different way as I have received no responses.   If you access a windows share from a non domain member you are prompted for a username and password.     you must enter domain\username is there any way to configure the server to accept just username?   Or to change the way you access the share to allow just username?

Try to access the share by the fqdn:  \\servername.domain.xyz\sharename (ex: \\FileServer.company.prv\tools).  You will have to make sure that this fqdn resolved for the client as well.

I have tried this and it does not work.    Same issue.

Nevermind, responded before coffee kicked in.  Actually, the problem you are having is normal for AD authentication.  When you try to just use the username and password method, the server thinks you are trying to use computername\username instead of domainname\username so authentication fails.  This is normal behavior and really no good work around for this.  By no good work around, I mean "without opening up security holes in your network".

lets assume I am not concerned about security since they are accessed through a SSL VPN...  is it possible to do?

I don't understand your comment....    the remote user is not part of the domain.   they log onto the SSL VPN .. then access the shares....

If you had a local user account on server as same user account name on on domain pc all with the same password, then it would work.  Like I stated, really not feasible :-)

by: Zoldy2000Posted on 2009-09-02 at 05:12:16ID: 25240105

the question was how to logon to a share from a remote machine without entering a domain name.   your answer was not only not practical but did not add any value.   Creating matching accounts so that a logon is not required is not at all a solution

by: SeeMeShakinMyHeadPosted on 2009-09-02 at 05:15:27ID: 25240125

And my answer was that it's not possible with your setup.  Sometimes "no solution" is the only solution.

by: Zoldy2000Posted on 2009-09-02 at 05:18:29ID: 25240153

So I am supposed to award points for you saying that there is no solution?   I am not sure I agree with that but I will let an admin decide what to do.
