The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Monitor / Block Web Traffic for 500 users.

Hi there
I have an ASA5520, protecting 2 inside networks and connecting them to the internet.
I need a solution that would allow me to monitor / block access to certain websites (i.e. non business related websites, or chat sites, or mp3 streaming sites, or adult sites) during certain periods of time for certain groups of people (i.e. admins can access all sites, sales clerks cannot access mp3 sites etc.). I know Websense does these pretty well, but I was wondering if
a- My ASA5520 (IPS Edition) has this function somehow so that I don't have to invest in an external solution.
b- There's software out there other than WebSense that achieves these objectives?

Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

Hmm, I currently use 3 interfaces on my firewall (inside, dmz and outside) for regular firewall stuff, inspecting traffic, routing (NAT) and site to site VPNs. Can I use the same firewall as a transparent firewall in the same time, or do I need a separate ASA for this?

Not sure of that.

The network that I managed has a Firebox x500 and the number of users were below 150 and only one VPN. The Watchguard Firebox allowed me to block specific sites, create user groups like allowing tours staff access to MSN cat whilst restricting to reservations staff and sales staff. It came bundled with a software called webblocker which had all the specific content that you mentioned included so I just had to click.
I am certain that the Watchguard Firbox could do what you need to do but not certain about how well it will integrate to your environment.
The Cisco product that you use seems fare better that what I used but since I do not have any hands on experience, I cannot assist fully. What I read on the site was very impressive though.

You could try contacting Cisco Help desk......

There is a Cisco CSC Module that you can put in the ASA that lets you do what you are asking for but I think it will not be able to handle your head count. I have worked with a variety of different solutions and feel that you really want to use an external appliance to do that.
On one hand you just want to restrict access to specific sites during business hours, but now the market is shifting towards scrubbing the content that passes in and out to prevent Data leakage and provide mitigating controls to prevent malware from coming into your network.

hope this gives you more things to think about.

if you want a list of alternatives to websense, I would look at appliances from macafee, baracuda, and computer associates.

is websense an appliance or is it a piece of software that runs on a server?

typically websense is software that you would run on a server, but some vendors have oem-ed it to run on their own appliances.
