The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cisco Router IOS upgrade

Tags: Cisco, Router IOS, IOS, old version
Hi guys! I need to do an IOS upgrade on a few routers but when I go to cisco.com I'm confused which is the right image I need.
We have a Cisco 2611 router c-2600-i-mz.122-8.T10 bin image and Cisco 1700 router with c1700-y-mz.122-4.ya2.bin image.

Which is the best image for upgrade and also I need to support SSH. I know it should have 'k9' in the name.
I'm not sure do I have to pay for these images or I can download them for free from the web site. I did that for a 2950 switch but not sure for router.

Thanks

If you currently have SmartNet coverage on both of the devices, then you should be able to download upgrades and be licensed for them.

You can also use this link to compare different IOS versions for your devices to make sure that is has the features you want.

We don't have SmartNet support. My routers are 5-6 years old. Can we buy Smartnet support for them now? How much is going to cost approximatly? Is there another way to upgrade the IOS images without buying SmartNet?
I was to that website but I'm confused which image to choose...

Your biggest limitation will be the amount of memory and flash you have. The K9 images require more and you could find yourself trying to upload your old images via serial if you put the wrong one one.

Post a 'Sho Ver' of the routers and I will let you know the image you need to support SSH

Below is the output from the 'show version' command.
I'm not sure how it works with Cisco support, that's why I'm gonna as again: We don't have SmartNet support. My routers are 5-6 years old. Can we buy Smartnet support now? How much is going to cost approximatly? Is there another way to upgrade the IOS images without buying SmartNet? Can I download them for free or I need to buy them?

The routers are end-of-life but it may still be possible to get a smartnet on it. If so, it would be listed under this part number: CON-SNT-PKG1 (for 1700) and CON-SNT-PKG2 (for 2600).

For small devices, SmatNet contracts are usually between $350 and $800 per year depending on the level of support you want.

In order to download a new operating system, you will require a SmartNet contract.

I cannot find any images that support the 1721 with SSH based on the amount of memory you have.
Your 2621XM can take image: c2600-ik9s-mz.123-24a.bin  which supports SSH (as well as VPN and other crypto services)
