The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

installing CF8 on VPS via SSH - is this possible?

Asked by xoundboy in SSH / Telnet Software, ColdFusion Application Server

Dear Experts

I am a coldfusion developer with a couple of years experience of building web apps in CFMX7 but would like to start using CF8 mainly so that I can use some of the modern features. My current shared host (Exabytes.com) is still on CFMX7 and has no current plans to upgrade to CF8 and looking around at alternative hosts that do offer CF8 it seems to be quite expensive.

The idea of renting a VPS, uploading the trial version of CF8 and installing / configuring it there came to me. If I can get it to work then I would fork out the cash for the CF8 license. I found a host just down the road that offers a basic VPS for 11 euros per month. The specs are:

Hardware

  Procesor: 400 MHz
  Memory: 256 MB guarantee 128 MB RAM
  Disk: 10 GB
  Connectivity: 100 Mbps       Euros11,-/month
  Setup fee: Euros 30,-
  Services: Administration , ISP Config

 Software:

    * Debian GNU/Linux in last stable version
    * ISP Config Control Panel
    * MySQL
    * Apache
    * PHP
    * Postfix
    * SSH
    * Webmin (optional)

Now, I have never used SSH and only vaguely know what it is/does, I have a little bit of unix experience but I'm still only a beginner. However, I'm a fast learner and have a strong desire to learn more about server admin.

I would really appreciate some general help on how to go about doing this - the potential pitfalls that I may encounter, or even whether it is possible at all. Is 4 days going to be enough time for me to learn the things I need to learn to get it up and running?

thanks in advance
