Have you thought about not using a PC at home and using a router instead? I use a Linksys WRT54g v4 with DD-WRT on it. It works like a charm and there is no need to have a PC on all day at home.

Browse All TopicsI am looking for a way to tunnel my internet using SSH through a hosting account, preferably godaddy. Does anyone know if it can be done with hosting, or maybe a reliable hosting provider that supports it if godaddy does not? I generally tunnel through my home PC but it is sooo unreliable, just curious if anyone had some input. I also usually use port 443 instead of 22 although that is not a huge deal. Thanks

Yeah, no problem. Check out http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki
If you are concerned about browsing privacy, make sure to address your DNS as well. Some people create SSH tunnels to protect browsing privacy but forget that they are leaking DNS requests the whole time.
One other cool thing that I use from time to time depending on where I am is ptunnel.

Very handy.
I use I-dentity Hosting (http://www.i-dentity.com)
Version 7.2 is only able to use the "micro" version of wrt-dd.

Your router only has 2mb of flash memory. Even if you load Micro on it, micro does not have the SSH server. Bummer.
You can buy one on eBay that will work (the old version of the wrt54g).

Good Luck!

The version 3 is actually one of the best ones Linksys every made.

Hi,
You can not do it with a provider. Providers give you acess through shell but they wont allow you to change listening ports of their ssh servers. They won2t allow you to direct ports through them neither.
To accomplish this you need a virtual hosting provider which will give you a whole virtual system. This will cost you aroond $20 - $30 monthly depending on the provider.
Cheers,
k.
