Question

SSH Tunnel internet through hosting account?

Asked by: drocco21

I am looking for a way to tunnel my internet using SSH through a hosting account, preferably godaddy. Does anyone know if it can be done with hosting, or maybe a reliable hosting provider that supports it if godaddy does not? I generally tunnel through my home PC but it is sooo unreliable, just curious if anyone had some input. I also usually use port 443 instead of 22 although that is not a huge deal. Thanks

Hi,

You can not do it with a provider. Providers give you acess through shell but they wont allow you to change listening ports of their ssh servers. They won2t allow you to direct ports through them neither.

To accomplish this you need a virtual hosting provider which will give you a whole virtual system. This will cost you aroond $20 - $30 monthly depending on the provider.

Cheers,
k.

Have you thought about not using a PC at home and using a router instead?  I use a Linksys WRT54g v4 with DD-WRT on it.  It works like a charm and there is no need to have a PC on all day at home.

Very interesting wdurrett. Could you maybe give me an idea how that works? I have a WRT54G at home also as well as a linksys broadband router. If I could do that it would be ideal actually

Yeah, no problem.  Check out http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/What_is_DD-WRT%3F.  It is open source firmware for you WRT54g (and other models of routers).  Included in the firmware is an SSH server.  Perfect for SSH tunnels.

If you are concerned about browsing privacy, make sure to address your DNS as well.  Some people create SSH tunnels to protect browsing privacy but forget that they are leaking DNS requests the whole time.

You are awesome, thank you! I have been using Firefox and change the about:config settings for the DNS issue so that should be good. I will try this out this evening and see what happens

One other cool thing that I use from time to time depending on where I am is ptunnel.

Very handy.

I use I-dentity Hosting (http://www.i-dentity.com) for $20 a year and pay about $5 for the domain registration. They give shell access (without root access) and the ability to FTP and SSH into the server. You can run a tunnel through Putty or another SSH program fairly easily. Then all you need to do is change the proxy setting in IE or whatever program you are using. If you need instructions on this, let me know.

Can you tell me the version number of your router?  it is on the underside of the unit.

by: drocco21Posted on 2009-08-13 at 15:50:43ID: 25093845

WRT54GS V7.2

by: wdurrettPosted on 2009-08-13 at 16:15:21ID: 25094017

Version 7.2 is only able to use the "micro" version of wrt-dd.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#Linksys_.28all_the_rest_that_is_not_re-engineered_til_today.29

Your router only has 2mb of flash memory.  Even if you load Micro on it, micro does not have the SSH server.  Bummer.
