Question

Help me set up SSH on FreeNAS?

Asked by: ubuntuguy

So I'm trying to set up SSH on my freeNAS server, but I seem to be doing something wrong.

I have set up an account with dyndns.org and enabled "Dynamic DNS" on freeNAS
I also have enabled SSH on freeNAS using port 22.
I also have set up port forwarding on my router to route port 22 to address: 168.192.1.250 which is the address for the machine hosting freeNAS

Can you ssh to the FreeNAS box from your local network?

by: arnoldPosted on 2009-10-09 at 12:47:10ID: 25538222

Along the line of giltjr, did you set up a port forwarding on the router to let port 22 to pass through to the FreeNas's IP?
Does the FreeNAS have iptables enabled, and was port 22 opened for all or is it limited to the LAN.
iptables -L
Check the Firewall/security settings.  note only non-root user will be permitted through the ssh based on your selection.
Do you have another local user other than root?

Well if I try to SSH to ssh.homelinux.org or to 192.168.1.250 it asks for my username and passoword, but when I try to log in it says: "ssh program unexpectedly exited". I set up port forwarding to forward port 22 to local address: 192.168.1.250 which is the freeNAS address. I don't see where IPtables are enabled/disabled on freeNAS. The freeNAS firewall is disabled. I attached a screenshot of the router firewall page. I'm not sure what has to be done there.

ssh program unexpectedly exited

run: ssh -v 192.168.1.250.
FYI: when using external address you do not want to advertise the services they host.
This way while your host is detected if scanned, you do not want to make your host a target where the attacker knows exactly what type of service they are going after.

Are you using a restricted account to login?

First, disable the port forwarding on the router.
Enable the root login on the FreeNas.
Try your login again while on the LAN.  Do you see a different response?

You may need to add a user to FreeNAS that will be used for the remote access.  You would then need to configure sudo (/etc/sudoers) to allow this user to elevate their rights following the login or use the su - to gain root access while connected remotely.

Thanks for the advice... I changed my domain name.

After running ssh -v 192.168.1.250 I get the following:

debug1: Authentication succeeded (password).
debug1: channel 0: new [client-session]
debug1: Requesting no-more-sessions@openssh.com
debug1: Entering interactive session.
debug1: channel 0: free: client-session, nchannels 1
Connection to 192.168.1.250 closed by remote host.
Connection to 192.168.1.250 closed.
Transferred: sent 1280, received 2064 bytes, in 0.0 seconds
Bytes per second: sent 282378.6, received 455335.5
debug1: Exit status -1

Then I disabled port forwarding and if I try to ssh to the domain name I get:
Timed out when logging in

Then if I try to ssh to 192.168.1.250 I get:
Connection to 192.168.1.250 closed by remote host.
Connection to 192.168.1.250 closed.

Closing the port forwarding on the external router should not interfere with your ability to access the FreeNAS ssh session.

Is 192.168.1.250 the IP of your FreeNAS?
You might be missing something such as an ssh user with the home dir of /var/ssh and a shell of /bin/false.
I think this is the issue, I.e. the ssh split can go through because of the missing username.
Are you able to telnet into the FreeNAS and then look at the /var/log/messages entries?

by: giltjrPosted on 2009-10-09 at 17:31:04ID: 25539931

Are you logging in with a user that has been setup with Full Shell access on the FreeNAS box?  Only users that are Full Shell can ssh in.

giltjr, yes I have full shell access to freeNAS. This is the log for SSH:

The users you are using seem to be predefined service users.  look at the shell type for each user you used or run the following
awk -F: ' { print $1,$NF} ' /etc/passwd

The list should be username shell
Valid shells that can ssh in  are /bin/bash. /bin/sh, bin/csh, /bin/ksh, /bin/tcsh

if you have /bin/true,/bin/false, /bin/nologin these usernames will not be able to have an interactive session.

Hey arnold I get the following output. My user name says: /bin/tcsh which a valid shell for ssh

I'm not sure what I should change or what needs to be done.

$ awk -F: ' { print $1,$NF} ' /etc/passwd
root /bin/tcsh
toor
daemon /usr/sbin/nologin
operator /usr/sbin/nologin
bin /usr/sbin/nologin
tty /usr/sbin/nologin
kmem /usr/sbin/nologin
www /usr/sbin/nologin
nobody /usr/sbin/nologin
ftp /sbin/nologin
man /usr/sbin/nologin
sshd /usr/sbin/nologin
_dhcp /usr/sbin/nologin
transmission /bin/sh
****(thisIsMyUserName)***** /bin/tcsh
guest /usr/local/bin/scponly

OK I had multiple user group selected for my user name. I removed all of them and selected "admin" only.  Now I am able to SSH from within the network.

If I try to SSH using my server domain, ie.  ssh myserver.com myUserName
I get prompted for my password, but after I input it, it get the following error: command not found.

The mutliple groups should not cause a problem.

Look at .tcshrc to see whether you have somedirectives there.

In short it looks as though you have .login, .profile or something similar trying to be processed and causing a problem.
But does the error prevent you from loging in and performing/running tasks remotely? ?

I'm not sure where .tcshrc is located
> find .tcshrc
find: .tcshrc: No such file or directory

If I ssh from within the network using the freeNAS ip address I can perform tasks on the shell. If I ssh using my domain name then I cannot log in, after I input my password it says, "command not found"

Great I got it working now!!!

I simply rebooted both freeNAS and my router and it's working perfectly now.
