Question

Ubuntu 8.10 Share a folder with Windows XP using Samba

Asked by: fjebja

Hi,
Need an experts help on how to share a folder on Ubuntu with Windows XP using Samba.
I installed Ubuntu 8.10 without any problem.
Configured the SMB.CONF to what i mean is correct by trying at least 10 different explanations from Internet.
But sadly I do not get this to work.
And this is the first time I use Ubuntu and Samba.

There is some few configuration details to change into your smb.conf. May I suggest to use this guide, I have checked personally to work?
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202605

It is not clear what doesn't work on your side. Have you configured your windows side to connect a network drive? You'll find details in the guide I linked.

If you don't care about the security of the folders and are happy for anyone to have access to the directory, including full read / write access : http://blog.controlunlimited.net/index.php/2008/04/02/simple-samba?blog=1

From you configuration with all the guest access = ok, I guess you are fine with everyone having access to everything.

Just make sure you change the force group and force user directives to be correct for your setup with the correct perms.

HI yah

change the
security = user  -> security = share  [ so you dont need to provide username and password]

[Bilder]
        comment = Pictures to share
        path = /home/User/Pictures/Pictures
        writeable = yes
;       browseable = yes    -> uncomment this line, other wise you would not be able to see the share
        guest ok = yes

what problem are you having ??

Well I give up.

Thanks for replying, but I do not get this working.
I've used together 10 hours to try charing a folder and I think Samba is not the solution for me.
It's unbelievably difficult!!

Any other application that i can use?

If the folder is on Ubuntu, you can use ftp internally in your LAN. Install vsftpd on ubuntu, then from windows you can create a network connection to ftp://user@<ubuntu_ip_address>

I'm gonna try the FTP.

S
orry but I can't find error to post.

The problem is this:

In Windows the login window want me to put my Samba password in over and over again.
It even tries the Windows guest account that is disabled.
In windows work group I see the Samba server, and when d-clicking it it shows Myfiles folder, but I can't access it.
In Webmin I give every folder I want to share full access, but I still can't access it.
Uninstalled Samba and installed it again.
I've cut and past your suggestion.
Renamed the smb.conf and configured a new one but that did not work.
The nett share doesn't work.
No FW.

That I did accomplish was to access Webmin from a Windows machine.
I'm sure that Samba works, but this is my third time trying folder share with Samba.

Not sure that every services runs.

HI sorry i didnot see your post

if you still want to work with samba
i would of install samba in ubuntu to test what happending

but have you tryed to change

security = user  -> security = share

share ??

by: fjebjaPosted on 2009-01-25 at 12:50:39ID: 23462634

Yes the share setting did make the folder visible in Windows, but I could not access it.

If samba is the only server sharing program in Ubuntu then I'm not sure I want to use Ubuntu at all.

But I'll try more suggestions.

Hi.

Did you visit this site:
http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/FastStart.html#id2546704

Especially I wonder if you  have added a smbpasswd for the user(s) that should have access?

root# smbpasswd -a jackb
New SMB password: m0r3pa1n
Retype new SMB password: m0r3pa1n
Added user jackb.

In Ubuntu you don't "root", you do "sudo smbpasswd......"

Perhaps you may want to reset the smb.conf to default and begin from scratch. The sort of problems you describe are unknown to me, usually it works very well. The www.samba.org site has a lot of good info.

Yeeeeesss and johoooooo.

It's working and I'm a happy man that need to thank fmarzocca and fosiul01for helping me.

I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.10 and started to configuring Samba by following the forum link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202605
Modified the global and files part.
On every SMB.CONF change I restarted the samba server.

In Windows only the nett share.
