Hello,
I am interested in setting up a distribution list as I have a large number of users for my website (including emails). However, I am a bit confused about a few issues.
I understand that to set up bulk email distribution email lists also requires the use of an smtp server. I already have an email account with my web host which includes pop3 and smtp settings, can I not use these same settings in any software to send out bulk emails. As a general point, I am looking at about 1000 to 2000 users so it isn't huge by bulk email standards. I have noticed many services charging very large sums to allow you to send bulk emails - I didn't understand the purpose of using this unless hosts put some limits on using their servers?
Secondly, I have not been able to locate reliable software using Google searches. I would appreciate if someone could recommend a range of the most popular email distribution software. Ease of use and administering users is a key factor for me.

Most of the hosters have no problems with mailing lists when they aren't advertisement-related.

On linux servers you can use the free application called Mailman.
It has a very nice administrator area where you can manage everything.
However you can first try to contact your webhoster to see if they don't provide a mailing list service. A lot of hosting company's provide it for free on their shared hosting platforms.
