The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

website access problem
Tags: website, unknown
Have problem accessing a website. It worked fine until about 3 days ago. Now when I click on the link I get only 2 pictures and a link to a different company. Just figured out that if I add /index.php to the url I get access to the website. NO one has accessed this site to make changes because the person that did the website just passed away and it will be a few more days before we can get his information folder for the website from his wife. Is this a host problem or any ideas on what happened.
I will get you the actual url if that would help. Any help will be greatly appreciated
Thanks

I daresay actual URL might help

03.26.2008 at 10:41PM PDT, ID: 21218853
here it is
www.mainstreetfinancial.net
this one accesses the website     www.mainstreetfinancial.net/index.php
thanks

03.26.2008 at 10:58PM PDT, ID: 21218900
Interesting. I don't know anyone would do it, but the html code for the www.mainstreetfinancial.net page (viewed source code) gives you exactly what you see.  There is no code listed to redirect you to the www.mainstreetfinancial.net/index.php.
If you have access to the html code for the website, you could do a simple PHP redirect.  You would want to put this code before any other code on the page:

<?php
header( 'Location: http://www.mainstreetfinancial.net/index.php') ;
?>

If you can't modify the page's code, I don't know that there's much you can do.

It sounds like the DirectoryIndex in the main host configuration got changed.

If you look in the folder, you may find an additional 'index' file.

In any case, I've seen something like this when 'index.php' ceased being the primary index file for the domain itself.

Looking at both links, I can see that the second link (the .php) has all of the same information that the first does, but is missing either includes, or some sort of style sheet.

It's really hard to say, but depending on the hosting company, you should be able to call them and get at least basic assistance - especially if you let them know that your maintainer just died, and you're trying to transition.

Thanks for your ideas. As of today we do not even know who does the hosting to say nothing for the login information. Not a good idea to have this much responsibility on one person with no one else even knowing basic information. We are paying the price for that now. Will have to see what we can get figured out. Funeral day is just not a good day to ask to look for information

The Whois information says that a Dan Luethje is the administrative contact (I'm not going to put the rest of the information in), and that the DNS is hosted by SECUREHOSTSERVER.COM.

Their information is

 Administrative Contact:
Experts, DNS  (hostmaster email is here, removing for spam trolling)
    3435 Ocean Park Blvd.
    112 PMB #52
    Santa Monica, CA 90405
    US
    310-314-1608    Fax: 310-314-1610

That's the best I can find right now - their web site doesn't seem to be coming up properly.

Thanks for that information we will run with it tomorrow

The last time I looked, the web site _did_ work correctly, so it may have been an internal site forwarding issue - the provider may have reset the system to correct it.

03.29.2008 at 04:35PM PDT, ID: 21238608
I wish  to be so lucky. I just checked it and It is not working correctly yet. We made a number of calls yesterday only to find out this is going to be a round for a while. Hope we find a support person soon that is willing to go the extra mile to help. We are on our knees with them, but all they say is they cannot help and none give any other place to try. But still trying to find/old get records.
Thanks

Okay - It's messed up again on my  machine. Interesting.

I take it that Mr. Luejthe is the person that died?  and he registered it in his own name, rather than the customers?

If the site wasn't .php, you could grab it off and move it to another server - as .php, you'd have to get the people hosting the site (the company I listed above) to give the information to you.

Let me know if I can help.

Thanks for sticking with use on this. It would be the easiest to say that Mr. Luethje was the one that passed away but he is not. It gets even more complicated than that as he obviously set it up some years ago but than turned it over to the person that passed away shortly after he started it. Mr Luethje is not available either. Getting to be a hugh lessen learned about more than one person, at the least, knowing where to find all needed information. I wish this was the only item we are in a pickle over. If our server crashed today we would be in quite a mess to get it all fuctional again. Than there is the Netgear VPN router. There are several tunnels setup in it that I would love to see how they are done and have the information recorded but we cannot figure out the user name or password to get access to it. -- This is going to go on for a while I think

I'd recommend that you try to find a good IT consultant in your area - someone who is used to trying to retrieve information from strange and wonderful sources.

On the domain (I could give you suggestions on the Netgear, but that's outside the scope of this particular question).

Here's what I see as what you need to get done.

1) Get the site fixed.
2) Get control of the domain name.
3) Get the site and the domain together with the right information.
4) Figure out the rest of your local network.

1) _should_ be able to be done through the hosting company, although it might cost more than you'd like.
2) should be able to be done, as long as the company itself is properly listed on the web site.   Make printouts, or use archive.org to get information on that.   With that information, you should be able to get some stuff rolling.  You _might_ have to file in small claims court against Mr. Luethje to seize control of the domain name.   Check into this - http://www.icann.org/udrp/udrp.htm - it may be you can get something expedited directly through ICANN.

3) will require 1 and 2, and then finding a hosting company that'll actually respond to support requests and has a working web site.

4) will probably require someone like myself (IT Consultant) in your specific area.   (no clue where that is)

Hope that helps.
