.mht attachments in a hotmail message won't open

i have received emails (in hotmail) with .mht attachments. these used to be powerpoint slide shows with a .ppt or.pps extension, attached to the email. i can save them and open them in powerpoint or work, but the information appears to be html info, not the expected slide show. this is not specific to any machine type or os.

what caused these files to become .mhts? and, is there a simple way for a user to fix them?
