The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

famiit--I do not think either of those toolbars are installing themselves without action by you.  However, when you install some other program, they may piggyback.  Look closely at the download site of any program you download and make sure there is no box (checked) that also installs these toolbars.  For example, when you download Flash, there used to be a box (checked by default) to download Yahoo Toolbar.
If you already have these toolbars (and are getting automatic updates), you should be able to uninstall from Control Panel|Add/Remove.

jcimarron-
We want to prevent other users from installing the toolbars on their pcs.  We plan to uninstall the toolbars and prevent them from being reinstalled.

famiit--It is possible to block access to the download sites by using a HOSTS file or IE's Content Advisor.
The official download sites are
http://toolbar.google.com/  and
http://toolbar.yahoo.com/
The problem is that there are alternative download sites.  If you ran searches for "Download Google Toolbar" and "Download Yahoo Toolbar" you might find the URL addresses of most if not all of the download sites and could enter those in HOSTS or Content Advisor as well.
There also is a way to block access to all sites except those approved
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=267930 (this works for IE6 and maybe for IE7 inspite of the title) but this maybe too drastic for your circumstances.

Don't understand your problem clearly.. :-s

Are you using client-server network?

With administrator permission, you can prevent anything you don't want to the clients: access or install software

famiit--I should have given you a reference to setting up a HOSTS file in case you do not use one already.

We do use a Client - Server network.  Unfortunately, we have had some programs that need users to be local admins to work.....SO.....Everyone is an admin.  I have brought it up before to retest all our apps to see if we still need users to be local admins....but no one wants to volunteer.  I have another question in EE
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Misc/Q_23238722.html
asking how to remove the Google Toolbar and Yahoo and....  JMayniac found a vb script that is going to work.  We use Numara Deploy to install programs and run jobs.  I have it setup to create dynamic groups based on if google toolbar is installed.  It will then run the vb script to uninstall the toolbar.  Deploy is set to check for updates every 30 minutes.  So, if the user reinstalls the toolbar, it will be uninstalled within 30 mins later.  I have checked our software audit list and have found that users have Google, Yahoo, and MyWebSearch.  My vbs now contains the removal of each.  As new search bars are found, I can just add the new removal code.
