The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

windows xp pro slow at start up and shutdown

My XP Pro SP2 computer slow down since 3 days ago. Perhaps I have
download some updates from microsoft  via Windows Update or affected by malware/spyware. The OS start with XP flashscreen, then
goto a black screen for 8 seconds, then welcome screen with message "logging in" ...Next, come to windows desktop with some
hanging about 20 seconds. The OS shutdown with about 30 seconds
speed.

Below is my hijackThis log file, please
help me to analyse anything wrong there:

Norton Internet Security woud be my first choice of possibilities.  Run msconfig, disable all non Microsoft services and uncheck any startup items related to NIS.  Reboot and see what happens.

I would have to agree that norton is a hog and will slow a system startup down considerably you should also look in your device manager for exclamation marks bad drivers or no drivers can also cause this problem.  I would also take a look in my event view to see if you see any warnings of items failing on boot.

Run msconfig, disable all non Microsoft services and uncheck any startup items related to NIS.  Reboot and see what happens. => same result without
improvement. The screen stuck mainly at "loading personal setting ..." and launching XP desktop with the time wait icon.

I have also upgrade the dial-up modem driver which show exclaimation mark.

From My Event Viewer since the PC restart, I get the following results:

System Event Viewer:
Warning 1003
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address XXXX.

The following error occurred:
The operation was canceled by the user. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

Error 1002
The IP address lease 192.168.xxx.xx for the Network Card with network address xxxx has been denied by the DHCP server 0.0.0.0 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Application Event: 1512 - Warning
Windows saved user MyComputerName\Peter registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

Dear EE members,

Is the slow down caused by the following for the pass few days:
1. I update my WIN XP SP2 with Windows Update.
2. I run a full anti-virus scan thru my PC.
3. My teenager cousin download some freewares from the internet. Anyway, I  have uninstall it from Add/Remove Program. Is this free stuff caused  trojan, malware or virus to my pc? or spoit my registry and make my pc move
slow? I have scan with symantec and also generate the above hijackThis log.

Regards,
Peter

no your log appeared clean from hijack this the event view indicates its having trouble getting an ip address from your router main cause is the dhcp address it is looking at is wrong. Which I would say was norton firewall causing that error.

just for kick can you try disabling all your network adapters such as your dialup and your lan adapters and reboot and see what happens.

If this doesnt help i would say run adaware see if you can find any spyware on the system and then try to defragment the harddrive.

I would remove Norton completely using the Norton Removal Tool:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Then download/install/update AVG free:

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free

Enable the Windows firewall via control panel; then download/install/update Superantispyware:

http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

That should replace the relevant Norton functions. Remove anything SAS finds. Also, you could clear your temp.files with a utility like Cleanup:

http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/download.html

This, coupled with the msconfig procedure and the defrag recommended by venom96737, should have an impact on your pc's responsiveness. Please post back and let us know...

I've just re-read willcomp's post.  In msconfig, try disabling any startup you know you don't need; likewise non-ms services.  The only startups that would be essential would be internet security software...

04.30.2007 at 06:30AM PDT, ID: 19001201
ok, first and foremost i would remove norton... takes up so much memory and processing nowadays, nowhere near as good as it used to be... i would recommend avast or maybe etrust... both of these are very cheap and in my opinion far better than norton and this alone will help you rpc seem a bit faster...

once you have decided for or against norton, are you running windows xp? is system restore actively scanning your drives? (as default this is normally YES), if so try going to start>programmes>accesories>systemtools>system restore and restore your system to a time when you think it functioned ok... might save you alot of time :)

you mention your cousin downling freeware off the internet... i only ever use 3 applications for this sort of job, all are free and regarded as the top in their respective fields..

spybot search and destroy will remove all your spyware

ccleaner will remove all temp files and useless cr4p off your system

spywareblaster will then stop you getting it in the first place!

all 3 of these can be downloaded free from www.majorgeeks.com

id also make sure any freeware in the future you download you get from a respected site like www.majorgeeks.com where they test everything before posting it on the site and also review it..

as always... before cleaning and removing spyware TURN system restore OFF from scanning your drives and when all is finished you can turn it back ON, this will prevent the system still being able to be reverted to the orignal state, you can turn system restore OFF by pressing windows key and pause break key (or alternatively right click my computer and go to properties), then click on the system restore tab!

it will take a while... its took 2 to 3 hours in the past on some bad systems i have repaired... you are the judge of exactly how bad your system is, if its that bad bear in mind you can rebuild and re-install windows in roughly 35 to 45 minutes and you have a perfectly clean and new system :) the easy way out but sometimes i prefer that to 2 to 3 hours of cleaning...

at the end defrag if required :)

Stopping NIS from loading will determine whether it is the culprit without having to uninstall it.  There's an excellent chance that it is.  If so, you can uninstall and replace with AV, firewall, and anti-spyware that have lesser effects on system performance.

Incidentally, McAfee is just as bad, if not worse.  Some I recommend:
AV --- AVG and Avast
Firewall -- Comodo and Zone Alarm
Adware/Spyware -- Webroot SpySweeper for commercial, SuperAntiSpyware for free

You already have SuperAntiSpyware which is the best of the free adware/spyware removal tools and the free version does not have a resident scanner.

Dear EE member,
I have attempted the following steps:

msconfig
1.1 Stop startup application: ccApp.exe and osCheck.exe
1.2 Stop all services including symantec services:
1.3 scan spyware with superantispyware in safe mode. -> no defects.
1.4 analyse harddisk before defragment -> show no defragmentation is required.
1.5 Reboot my PC.

Conclusion: No improvement.

2.1 Disable LAN connection and Disable broadband connection and
      reboot computer -> no improvement.

3.1 create a new user account and login -> no improvement.

4.1 Check any exclaimation mark in device manager -> none.

Note: I have a pc with dual mode: WIN XP Pro and WIN 2000 PRO.

Hardware Spec:          RAM: 504 MB  Speed: 2.4 Ghz
Harddisk: Partition 1: 38.8 GB Freespace 25GB -> WIN 2K
Partition 2: 37.4 GB Freespace: 33.7GB -> WIN XP PRO

Observation:
WIN XP run with welcome screen. The login and logout process take quite
long. After accessing Desktop, the process also takes time.

Any more help?

Regards,
Peter

start - run - msconfig - startup tab - "disable all"
                                   - services tab (tick the "Hide all Microsoft services" box) - "disable all"
Reboot. Any change?  If there is an improvement, re-enable startups and services one-by-one until things begin to slow down, then review which startup or service is problematic...

Dear all,

My XP start with the following process (A,B,C,D,E,F,G):
              A                                       B                                    C
Choose XP from Dual boot -> WIN XP Screen -> Black screen for about 8 seconds
              D                                                                             E
-> "Windows is starting up" about 3 seconds -> XP Welcome Screen about 5
                                                                            F
seconds after entering login profile ->Desktop launching -> Without many

                                                                                       G
startup program and services -> 3 seconds -> Desktop launch completed.

prototropic suggestion has improved process from F to G.
But, the critical tuning is on:

1. C to D.
2. E to  F.

Peter

Any hints/solutions for C to D and E to F.
While during shutdown/restart, the logging off screen only appear after 15 sec.

"...Black screen for about 8 seconds
"Windows is starting up" about 3 seconds -> XP Welcome Screen about 5 seconds after entering login profile ->Desktop launching ..."
This sounds pretty normal to me...what is the problem?

Dear EE member,
The seconds are estimated only. Actually, it takes
about 3 minutes for the process from my watch.

"...Black screen"->
"Windows is starting up" -> XP Welcome Screen after entering login profile ->Desktop launching ..."

As a conclusion, it takes 5 minutes from start to
Desktop launching. It takes another 4 minutes after
triggering the shut down button till windows is
shutting down.

Peter
