The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

It looks as if this Obfustat spyware comes in .ZTA and .VDK varities and is in the early stages of recognition, so it is unliklel anyone will have documented remediation steps for it.

There is some chat in the Microsoft Discussion Groups Home within the group "Home Users Security Discussion" and also in the following occurances in Microsoft's NETSCAN Project:
October, 3 mentions
November, 0 mentions
December, 0 mentions

There are free online tools to confirm a file is infected, but I am not seeing steps to clean it up.

It would help if we could see what was going on with your computer. I suggest that you download, run, and upload a HijackThis log from the link below.

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php

Please upload the log at EE-Stuff.com
Use the link below and login using your Experts-Exchange username and password.
http://www.ee-stuff.com
Click on "Expert Area" tab
type or paste the link to your Question
"Browse" your pc to the location of your Hijackthis log and click "Upload"
Copy the resulting "url" and post it back here.

Run Kaspersky online virus scan Kaspersky Online Scanner.
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

After the updates have downloaded, click on the "Scan Settings" button.
Choose the "Extended database" for the scan.
Under "Please select a target to scan", click "My Computer".

Note: You have to use Internet Explorer to do the online scan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
http://www.superantispyware.com/

    * Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
    * Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
    * Click the Scanning Control tab.
    * Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
          o Close browsers before scanning.
          o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    * Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
    * Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    * On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    * On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
    * Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    * After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
    * Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
    * A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
    * If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".

Looks like Vundo. First thing I want to comment on is it looks like you have 2 Antivirus programs running, AVG and Norton/Symantec. I would advise you to remove one of them. Having 2 AV's can cause system slow down, conflicts, errors, false positives, ect....

For Vundo....

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Disable your Anti-virus and any real-time Anti-spyware monitors that are running.
Then double click Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Upload that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2: Remember to re-enable your Anti-virus and Anti-spyware.

NOTE: If you have issues connecting to your network or internet after running combofix you can either simply reboot, or do the following:
* Going to Control Panel > Network Connections.
* Right click on their Network icons & select "Repair"
or
Alternately, if the Network icon appears in the notification area in the lower right corner of Desktop, right-click it, and then click Repair from the shortcut menu.

Before we do anything....do you know what these files are?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\2FB56BF9-E22B-45C6-A29D-C660835499F8.cxv

There are several like this in your combo log. I've never seen them before. Did you just recently install some kind of "custody exchange" software? More info here:

http://filext.com/file-extension/CXV

Let me know and we can remove a few items with a CF script. How is it running by the way?

do not know about the custody exchange software  this is a clients computer and i doubt any software was newley installed.  avg is the only program that catches the virus after uninstalling it symantec doesn't even detect it.  I decided to uninstall avg and if i get any complaints i'll just reformat the computer.  thanks for your help though.
