Of course, nothing catches everything, so I would also combine that with AdAware and Spybot S&D.

Personally, I dont trust other spyware removers as there are some programs on the internet that advertise to remove spyware but themselves install adware. I have even run across "spyware removers" that install spyware themselves in order to make you buy the full version of their product.

As for myself, I don't install programs from untrusted sources. In addition, I use Microsoft's product, Windows Defender.

Also, as many spyware / adware applications activate via a browser helper object, I use BHOdaemon to look at and disable any BHO's.

It's true that many programs claim to be anti-spyware but are really packed full malware themselves. I can tell you that CounterSpy, AdAware and Spybot are clean and work as advertised as long as you get them from respectable places. I think that if you get them from the programs site or from download.com you'll be fine.

I have been an AVG reseller for quite some time and they are a great company! I have also been using Lavasoft Ad-aware. I have run into trouble with Spybot on a few occasions so I only use that as a last resort. I just used Superantispyware for the first time today and it looks pretty good! I clean between 5 and 10 workstations a month, it seems like a never ending battle! Most clients opt for the paid versions which in most cases (AVG, Lavasoft, Superantispyware) this will get you a real time protection to stop future trouble.

I work for an IT company and we religiously use Lavasoft Ad-aware and failing that we use Spyware Doctor which has worked 100% of the times we have had to use it.

You can find either of them to download on http://www.download.com.

Both tried and tested.

Spybot, AdAware are the generic scanners that takes care of common easy to remove nasties, but if you want better then there's AVG Antispyware and SpySweeper, and if you want the best then there's SUPERAntispyware.

One of the requirements of posters who ask for help at antispyware forums is that they must scan their system with Spybot and AdAware first.
Now if Ad-Aware and Spybot could handle hard to remove nasties then antispyware forums won't be swarmed with infected hijackthis logs where posters have between 3 to 5 days waiting period to get helped.

The problem with reviews is that they are often biased; we could pull up reviews all day with no clear conclusion offered to the author.

However it is not debatable that Defender is built into the operating system of Vista. A built in feature will usually always triumph over an aftermarket third party add on, this is even more true when we factor in Windows Update.

So for Windows Vista I would definitely recommend Defender.

Myself i belive in the Windows defender, yes cause its free but also if you look at it, Microsoft has the quickest response to resolve a problem, Spybot is also my best friend, and also AUTORUNS <-- google it, easily remove bad BHO's simply remove anything but microsoft from the LOGON tab and many other cool features. worth while trying it out.

SpyBot Search and Destroy
Lavasoft's Adaware
HiJack This
MS Defender (Not all the time)
SmitFraud Remover
AVG (Anti Virus)
Also AVG's Antispyware (used to be Ewidos)
Just carry them on a thumb drive, when you get to the client, is easy to start cleaning.
There are more utilites, but I find these, which most are all free btw to be best, IMHO
