Browse All TopicsI am trying to backup and restore to another PC AOL mail that is stored locally. Windows is in an unstable state. I actually can't get the Desktop and Start Menu to load. However, I can go Task Manger, Run, and run AOL that way. I follow the steps to backup the mail data to a PFC backup. The bar scrolls across and looks like it is completed. Also, it is set to backup every 4 weeks so it should have happened sometime not too long ago. I then take the HD out of the PC and slave it in another one. I then search and browse and cannot find any PFC files. Thank you for your help.

The PFC containing mail "saved on my PC" and Favorite places is a file yourScreenName with no extension. Use Tools, Folder Options, View, show hidden files and folders. For XP and 9.0 Optimized, it is in folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\(hidden folder)Application Data\AOL\C_America Online 9.0\organize . For Vista and 9.0 VR, C:\(hidden folder)Program Data\AOL\C_AOL 9.0\organize . There is a backup under C_AOL 9.0\backup. Use keyword Startup Settings, uncheck Enable Fast Start, exit AOL before replacing the file. You might also have a saved file in a folder on the desktop if you uninstalled AOL.
Mail, Mail Settings, Manage Saved Mail gives you options to make a Backup, Restore from backup, or Compact the PFC. If the PFC is very big (maybe over 100MB) it may get corrupted. You can Restore from the backup, which may be up to 4 weeks old (and missing the most recent mail). If that works, you can Compact to keep it manageable. If you are transferring to a new computer, Backup first, then Compact, and check that all your folders are still there.
