asked on

Your IMAP server wants to alert you to the following: Can't read attachment for message 3932 AOL Outlook 2007

I am pulling my hair out. I have a client who uses Outlook 2007 to look at her AOL account with some 10,000 messages in it (don't ask).

We had to replace her hard drive due to errors on the drive. I have set up her AOL account with Outlook using IMAP. Now, she consistently gets messages like the one above and also messages saying "Your IMAP server wants to alert you to the following: 4494 (1032) That mail is not currently available.

Now, I cannot look through all the messages on AOL to figures out which is message 4493 or 3932.
I have replaced the 2nd hard drive with a third one and get the same problem.

Here is how I set up Outlook:
incoming server : imap.aol.com
outgoing server: smtp.aol.com
Incoming  : port 143
Outgoing: port 587

Every time Outlook does a send/receive, these messages come up. And, it takes an incredibly long time to do a send/receive. Minutes go by. By the time the first is done, the next send/receive starts with the same messages.
It's making me crazy. Of course, this was not happening on her old hard drive so it must be some setting that's wrong but I cannot find any good help on Google or AOL.

Thanks for your response. I will give that a try.

Since posting the question, I figured out that the message saying "Can't read attachment..." was because the attachments were PDF's and I hadn't yet installed Adobe on her computer. Once I installed Adobe reader, that message went away.

I still get the message ' "Your IMAP server wants to alert you to the following: 4494 (1032) That mail is not currently available.  I'm sure if I could figure out which message is #4494, I could get rid of that one and the problem would go away.
It's not 100% sure you'd get a working store even if you find that message. It might be that the store has become corrupted and the message you see is just for one message (might be several).
So, I've tried several times to export the AOL messages to a pst file. It takes it's time (there are 8848 messages on AOL), but the export only gets 4991 of them. The size of the pst is also smaller than the original file. So, unless we can figure out why this is happening, this option won't work.
4991 ok, rest are corrupted. Read my previous post.
No, I don't agree rest are corrupted. I can view emails from  months ago until today. I can go to the earliest email she has on either AOL.com or Outlook and view hundreds of them ( I did this today).  I think only one email  is corrupted. I deleted around 1000 emails today and the message appears again but this time, the number has changed from 4994 to 3876 which coincides basically with the number of messages I deleted.

I gave the laptop back to the client tonight and we'll see what happens. I only got the message on the first send/receive after opening Outlook. Subsequent send/receives did not produce the message. Unless I shut down Outlook. On reopening, message appeared again.
That is because Outlook syncronizes the local cache upon start and then and only then stumbles over the faulty message. My original solution will work and is a nice way to clean up old emails (seen employees saving 3 year old lunch dates). If you want to follow your route read more about message numbers here:

Haven't actually implemented the fix but I think this would do the trick.
Update to this post for anyone with this problem. The ultimate fix for the client was to use Outlook's archive function to archive all her mail and then delete everything from AOL and start over with AOL. This is essentially what peakpeak was suggesting - just another way to do it.
