Question

Mozilla Firefox - keep browser but remove default

Asked by: hennanra3

Hello,

I recently installed Firefox and I find that it tends to hijack the default browser status.  I prefer using Internet Explorer but find when I click on links in emails etc it opens up Firefox.  Please can someone advise the steps I need to take to ensure that IE is my default browser and Firefox does not open unless I specifically open the application.

Kind Regards,
Raheel

Open IE.  Go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Programs and select "Internet Explorer Should Check to see if it is the default browser".  Then restart IE and select it as the default browser when prompted.

Hello all,

I had already changed all those settings as they were quite obvious - hence none of those solutions help unfortunately.  It is actually when I click in URL's in Outlook that is the main problem.  I assume there is some default setting in Outlook that is giving preference to Mozilla Firefox.  Further, it does something strange before it opens the browser - it goes to the file window as if it is trying to open an executable file or folder so it doesn't recognise the URL as a web URL but appears to think it is a file URL.  When I close that window, then Firefox opens.

Regds,
Raheel

See this page for help with Mozilla and do the reverse to set up IE.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_browser#Setting_default_browser_manually
I would also confirm that IE is set as default here.

Open My Computer, select Tools->Folder Options->File Types.
Scroll through list to find these and make sure IE is set as default:

     URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
     URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy
     URL:File Transfer Protocol
     HTML File
     HTM File (optional)

Note that you may find the URL file types above under extension "N/A" or "(NONE)".

You may need to hit the Advanced button and make sure DDE is unchecked, also.

This is from MS.

Now if this is a work machine, have you confirmed your IT people haven't locked down your browser preference?

Many thanks mtz1of4 - that hit the nail on the head.  I changed the relevant URL settings to IE by checking my settings at work as a reference point and all problems were resolved.   Actually, my preference is not to use Firefox (I have a very negative view of Firefox) - but I use it for testing some websites I work on.  Anyway - thanks again!

Thanks hennanra3,

Glad it's working for you now.  Keep in mind, you can have as many browsers as you like installed, even Opera and Safari, if you like.  Just run the one you want when you want.
