this is what we get if we connect to AX Enterprise Portal (ERP) thru FF, but putting in fully qualified creds lets us thru, whereas IE just connects in same way as Outlook works - MS build this into the ERP to allow IE to 'pass' through and use existing logged creds.
as for your intranet, i would imagine its a similar issue if IIS is being used, ours is hosted externally, but we can connect ok from both browsers, so it maybe a security/script error on your site -- have use existing login credentials, rather than ask for new ones. check the security permissions for the website/intranet.
The login credential must be OK because IE7 or IE8 access the INTRANET ok.
(for info the INTRANET is hosted locally on an SBS2000 server (i.e. IIS).
Further information:-
I find if I access the Intranet URL by entering it's IP address I CAN access the site (this implies some sort of DNS problem- but because IE is woring OK DNS must be resloving OK).
However, the site contains a mixture of external URL links and links to local files on shared folders.
The External URL's are accessible. The local files are not - clicking a link does nothing.
I also tried entering the IP/INTRANET name in the HOSTS file to negate DNS but the problem still remains.
For info: we have a link to Outlook web access from the Intranet. When using IE and clicking the link OWA opens straight away, but firefox prompts for username & password each time and the successfuly opens OWA.
you definitely do not have a DNS issue if IE is working ok. it sounds like whoever setup the Intranet (Sharepoint by any chance???) hasn't set it up to use either the LDAP protocol to your domain controller so it shouldn't have to prompt for credentials and use AD, or your Integrated Windows Authentication is a bit 'out of whack' so to speak.
however IWA only works for IE and your intranet should listed in your trusted sites list (which gets pushed out when you deploy your corporate build of IE via IEAK), otherwise as you can see, you will get prompted for everything, including links. We use GPO to set the default home page in IE to the intranet - and its locked so it can't be changed. GPO could also be used to push out other trusted sites.
if an external dev did the site for you, i woudl suggest checking with them to see if they can remedy it, but i think with a few tweaks of IE configuration you might be sorted, rolling it out to all systems is the tricky bit. Using FF might be a no go, if you can sort the authentication, or trusted site issue. does FF prompt to save credentials???

For info - Problem fix:-
Adding the IP address of the INTRANET to W2000 ISA server's ALWAYS ALLOWED SITES.
I don't know if Allways Allowed SItes is a standard Destination set for W2000 but that's how ours is set to control users acessing the internet.
In a nutshell the ISA server needed it's own IP address in addition to permitted external URL's for firefox to work. Whereas IE didn't have a problem.
Thanks to all for suggestions

Depending on what solution you have for your intranet, you may need to use IE. I have a couple of appliances that will not work with FireFox. I use IE tab plugin for FireFox, Which lets me specify sites that will always open in an ie tab within FireFox.
