I tried to install Mozilla Firefox 3.5.4 on a Win XP Pro, SP3 machine. After it installed, I clicked on the firefox icon and it struggled with the Firefox is installing your updates and would popup Firfox cannot install the update please check to make sure no other versions of firefox are running (there were no other firefox proceeses running). So then it kept doing that cycle repeatedly on its own every time I would hit the OK and now it is popping up Mozilla crash error reporting whenever I click on the friefox icon. How Can I fix this?

jeffschick--Look into Event Viewer (Start|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer). Click on "System" in the left panel. Do you see RedBall error icon(s) timestamped at the exact time the problem occurred? If so, click on the RedBall. The first message will have some data on what the problem is, but usually it is not too easy to understand. Click the blue go.microsoft.com link. On the next window click the link to send a report to Microsoft. Another window should open (though it may take some time for the information in the right panel to appear) which may offer some more understandable info and maybe even a solution.
jeffschick.
Chances are it's a conflicting Add-on causing this issue. Since you were able to install the latest, when you look at Start->All_programs->Mozilla
Try running that, it disables your add-ons. If that works you can either try disabling one or a bunch of add-ons at a time, restarting between your decisions and seeing which one causes the crash. OR you could simply start Firefox's profile manager by going to the Start->Run and entering
firefox -p
in the run line and hitting enter. This lets you create a New Profile and if that works fine, you can then start reimporting Favorites, and passwords from your old corrupt profile.

the last thing i can come up with is removeing firefox, and delete all remaining stuff from it in program files.
Then login as another user (just create one) and rename your own folder i documents and settings. now login to your original user. this will recreate your user folder. i have seen this trick resolve some of the strangest errors.
just move all your documents and so on to the new folder that was created.
it seems it does, or that something is corrupt that firefox depends on.
i have seen some antivirus programs coursing firefox to crash like avg antivirus.
have you installed any new programs reacently ?
aditionally try and read this thread. there are alot of suggestions that seems to match your problem perfectly.

Jeffschick,
This has never worked on this machine yet, correct?
Is this a work machine? They may be blocking the install of Firefox.
If this is your own personal machine, you could try Portable Firefox, which you could place in one of your own Folders and it will keep EVERYTHING there, including the Profile.

Firefox 3.0.X was installed previously, working fine, but then when it said to update and restart it tried to install the update, failed, and then began popping up the crash reporting message. It is a work machine, joined to an AD domain. Neither the domain user nor my administrator account can open the firefox on this machine, although we can still use firefox on other computers (roaming profiles).

jeffschick--Can you reboot and run System Restore to a time before you tried to install FF 3.5.4? Or uninstall whatever versions of FF are now on the PC.
Download the latest FF installation file. (The one you are using may be corrupt.)
Then, when you try to install FF the next time, turn off your Antivirus program. Better yet, turn off all other programs.
