The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Try running the system file checker  sfc /scannow

Chomps,

The problem could be a corrupt IE file or a program interfering with IE.
1. Disable Addons.  Go to Tools > Add-on Manager, and uncheck the addons.

2. Reset IE settings.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced.  Click on "Reset" button. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

3. Check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet Explorer. Temporarily disable antivirus, firewall, antispyware, ad-blocker, popup blocker, and all Norton programs.

4. Uninstall and reinstall IE7. Make sure you have the latest updates.

I ran sfc /scannow however I don't see any results.  Are they saved to a log file somewhere?

What is the procedure for uninstalling IE7?  I am using Norton internet security, is it known to interfere with IE7?

Rank: Genius

1. Uninstall IE7.  Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Microsoft Internet Explorer.  If you cannot find Internet Explorer 7 in Add or Remove Programs, click Start, click Run, type %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note: %windir% is the location of your Windows directory, which can usually be found at C:\Windows. To do this, you need to have "view hidden folders" enabled.

2. Then prevent IE7 from automatically downloading. You can still manually download IE7 in the future.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4516A6F7-5D44-482B-9DBD-869B4A90159C&displaylang=en

Norton Internet Security is known to interfere with everything. Temporarily disable it, and see if IE7 works.

Start>Run>eventvwr will produce a dialog box containing Event Logs. It is of interest to see the Event ID and other information regarding the failures.

And, no, sfc does not log it's actions. It simply replaces any system files it deems corrupt.

I ran sfc /scannow and also made sure that I downloaded all Windows Updates.  I have not had internet explorer crash since then, although it does freeze occasionally for a short period of time.  The freezes may have to do with my internet connection speed.  So, I am still not sure of what caused the crashes or if they will happen again.

If IE crashes, the most likely problem is that there's a buggy add-on (Toolbar or Browser Helper Object).  In order to verify and isolate the buggy add-on, follow these steps:

       1. Start IE in No Add-ons mode, either by right-clicking the Desktop icon, or clicking START | RUN and typing: iexplore.exe -extoff
       2. Determine if IE fails.
       3. If not, use Tools | Manage Add-ons to disable all browser extensions and toolbars.
       4. Restart IE and reenable browser extensions one-by-one.
       5. Once you've found a broken extension, contact the manufacturer and ask for an update.

    (Reference: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=928426)

If IE still crashes on startup, and you've got Google Desktop installed, please ensure that you update to the latest version of Google Desktop.

I am still monitoring the crashes and trying to figure it out.  It crashed again the other day, and in the event log, I noticed that Flash9b.ocx (shockwave flash object from Adobe) was responsible.  However, this is the first time that this has been recorded.  The other crashes that I have had did not indicate Flash9b.ocx.  So, I appreciate your patience in trying to help me, but I still do not have a solid solution or answer.   Thanks.

Chomps,
Have you tried uninistalling and reinstalling IE as suggested. If so did you do this with NIS disabled? I would also disable NAV auto protect for this at same time.

Chomps, have you disable IE addons?

03.29.2007 at 07:38AM PDT, ID: 18816480
I have been monitoring question because I am also having the same problem with IE7 constanly crashing and referenceing Flash9b.ocx.

03.29.2007 at 12:55PM PDT, ID: 18819307
I recently uninstalled the Flash9b.ocx and reinstalled it.  So far, IE7 is working ok.  A few weeks ago I did try disabling the addons, but I still experienced a crash.  I have not uninstalled IE7 and re-installed yet.  I will try that next if it keeps crashing.

I will keep you guys updated.  Thanks again.

IE 7 still freezes for short periods of time and occasionally crashes.  I have not been able to pinpoint the exact problem but I think Flash9b.ocx is a big contributor to the problem  I split the points between the two people that provided the best solutions so far.  Thanks for all your help.

I've had similar problems in the past, and the only solution I managed to find was complete o/s reinstall. I know that's a pain and drastic, but sometimes it's the only workable solution.
Thanks for the points. Wish I had more suggestions.
