The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

LTWadmin,

This is a common ad problem.  You can use the HOSTS file to block this unwanted parasite.

You can also change your 'Cookie' handling to 'Prompt' for First Party cookies and 'Block' for third party.

I've been using this for about two months and highly recommend it:

Download and install Superantispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE
Load Superantispyware and click the "check for updates" button.
Re-boot into "Safe Mode" (tap the F8 key during boot cycle and select 'Safe Mode'

* Start Superantispyware.
Click the "scan your computer" button.
Check "Perform Complete Scan" and then next.
Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
Click "Preferences" and then click the "statistics/logs" tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.

war1:  I edited the Hosts file as suggested on the web site.  No examples were provided so it looks like:

127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.0.1      ad.doubleclick.net

Went to CNN - began clicking around - got this:

Your search - http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/N3973.CNN/B1849993.6;sz=120x90;click=http://ads.cnn.com/event.ng/Type=click - did not match any documents.

ITWadmin,

Yes, that the proper way to use the HOSTS file to block the address. Your result shows that ad.doubleclick.net is blocked.  You will not be able to click on some advertisements.

OK - sorry.  I suppose I may have mis-stated the problem.  This user is being redirected to a page with this link on alsmost 40% of the legitimate links she clicks - in this case, it's the CNN page and others...

Some website has hijacked your search.

1. Use the following scanners to find and remove the website.

Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/
or
Spy Sweeper
http://mysite.webroot.com/forms/Infoworld
or
SpyBot S&D searches your harddisk for so-called spy- or adbots;
http://security.kolla.de/
or
Adaware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

2. Doubleclick website redirects links to their websites using your HOSTS file. Do a search for the HOSTS (without extension) file and remove the entry.

HOSTS file is located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC. It is a hidden file, so you need to unhide hidden files to see it. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

3. If still no joy, download HijackThis

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Run the program and you will find many entries. Most are OK. Post the log at http://www.hijackthis.de/ and click Analyse, Save.  Post a link to the saved list here.

LTW -
The Freeware version will work fine for you.
Download, install, and update in 'Normal Mode'.
Then re-boot to Safe Mode and do your scan.
Actually, start with a scan in Normal Mode and see what it finds -then do another in Safe Mode.

War1 I think your solution was probably the most comprehensive.  I tried most of the things offered here (appreciate eveyone's help) but the problem just kept coming right back.  I gave up and ditched IE for FireFox - problem solved - user happy...  Thanks again...
