The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Internet Explorer says The Address is not Valid
Tags: address, valid, internet, explorer
I've got a user that is having problems w/ IE.  Whenever they go to a webpage, sometimes it loads the pages extremely slowly, but most of the time, they get an error saying "The Address is not Valid" w/ http:/// in the address bar.  I've tried deleting all cookies/temporary files w/ no luck.  This user was recently traveling and using several wiFi networks.  Other than that, nothing strange I can identify.  The system is still on the internet though as I am able to remote in.  The user is also able to use other internet related programs, instant messaging for example.  Suggestions?

What version of IE are you running?

7.0

Is there anything on your users system that streams media? Or might be used to download large files? (i.e. do they use bittorrent, do they download MS service-packs etc??)

that can be due to a damaged or corrupted http prefix
copy and paste the following in a notepade file and save it as prefix.reg

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

double click on prefix.reg
say yes to add information to the registry
and then restart to check the results.

actually those lines should be in one line, like this;

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

There is no media streaming software installed on the system.  The user does use skype, but that's about it.  Pretty standard system.

I tried the registry suggestion, but in both cases, I got an error message that said:

Cannon import prefix.reg.  The specified file is not a registry script.  You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

I don't know much about those particular keys in the registry, but I went in and had a look and the values looked like the ones you listed above.

I'd definately look at when the following was created and accessed..
[?] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ejansr.exe - This is a unknown process.

Getting rid of that process fixed my issue.  Very interesting, that was a new one for me.  Thanks so much for your help.

You might want to check the registry to make sure the file (or a similar one - sometimes under a different name) is created at startup.

Some malware is set to recreate a file such as this, and will use a different string of random letters for a filename - the telltale here is the dates on the file, which is usually in the System32 folder.

Do a full spyware/virus scan at the next opportunity..

Glad to have helped..
