Question

IE7 allow only certain websites

Asked by: DayHelper

Is there a way in IE7 to only allow certain sites.  For example.........I only want an XP2 Pro system with IE7 to go to 'two' websites.  I only want to allow those two websites with the ability to add others as they come up.

Does IE7 allow this level of lockdown by profile, or would this require (or warrant) a 3rd party software package?

Greetings DayHelper !

You can configure IE7 content advisor to block all sites except a couple
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/267930

The instruction is for IE6. but applies to IE7.

Best wishes, war1

The no-cost way is to setup IE content advisor by adding and using the "noaccess" ratings file.

Here is the Microsoft KB that tells you how to do this - don't worry about it saying IE5 - it works the same for IE7 - just follow the instructions for Win 2000/NT for were to put the noaccess.rat file (windows/system32).

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/267930

I've used this in the past to lock down IE on computers that were being used inappropriately.  I hope this is what you are looking for.

War........sorry.  Thank you for the quick response.  I've got a new prem account and forgot to service this question.  I still need this solution and will try to implement this weekend.  This looks like just the thing I was looking for, if it works for IE7.

War1 - I decided to use the "???"....... - tools/internet options/content advisor.  It seemed a bit clunky at first, but it fits our needs.  I set up an XP Pro computer and have one ID that has no install abilities and 'anything' accessed in IE brings up a password screen that only momma knows.  I think once you tell a specific site to "allow every time" it actually does...I think.

There is another ID set up on the computer that allows one of us to turn off the content advisor thingy to prevent the annoyance of the password each time.

Your method also worked and was accurate for my question so I would award points to you.  Problem is, I haven't got the folks I passed this account to..........to renew it.

Is there any way for me to get an site admin to award these points?

Thank you,
  - the original DH.

The link to the Microsoft KB article is gone.  This solution needs an update.

The KB article is gone and there appears to be no replacement.  However, this link provides some good instructions on how to do this.
