IE is not using system's default PDF viewer. How can I fix that?

One of my users is having trouble reading PDFs through IE 6. For some reason IE is using a different program than the one that is set through Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types.

The default program for PDFs should be Adobe Reader but the one that is being used in IE is a different one. (Adobe Reader is used as default because it displays files better than the one we use for editing and converting.)

Firefox on the other hand does not have this problem. It uses the system default.

The preferences thing didn't work. This software that is causing me trouble came with our Dell machines and is from Nullsoft. It's pretty buggy. For example, I have a Brother 8840DN and when someone uses it to scan (and then email) a document, in PDF format, the document will always have at least one blank page when viewed through Nullsoft's PDF program. On the other hand Adobe Reader reads the scanned documents just fine, each time.

The reason I keep the Nullsoft program installed is because my users think it's easier to edit PDFs with than Adobe Professional. Go figure.

Next step is to try a reinstall.
The re-install of Acrobat should reset the registry to teh levels you want. Good luck.
When I logged in as the administrator this morning there was an update from 8.1 to 8.1.1 that "fixed" the problem. Probably had the same affect as doing a reinstall.
